Default Program to Convert Image to SBIG Format

In the process of archiving a lot of my older images I came across the need
to save other graphic file formats , mostly TIFF and BMP to SBIG format ,
so that I have all images in the same format, can use the same post
processing, etc.
I was not able to find any way to convert these file formats to SBIG,
although I found some software to do the reverse , from SBIG to other
formats , which is definitely *not* what I needed to do .
Does anybody here have any pointers , please , to programs that perform this
conversion ? Any links, hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

best regards,
Matt Tudor

Richard Berry's camera program source (or is it his early program for
manupating images) has the formats for a number of different file formats in
it. I have the source somewhere but I think that it is available on the web
from his site. I remember looking at it years ago, contemplating doing some
mods to the program but never got anywhere with it. I did a quick check on
this computer and didn't find the code but it may be on another obsolete
computer hanging about.
As I recall, the file has some minor header info and then the image in a
long string.

False! And quite simplistic...

Right. That should read "Losing weight is easy! If you ever want to lose
weight, consume less calories than you burn. Works every time it is tried!"

Stephen Paul (who needs to put that into practice...)

CCDSoft will save to SBIG format quite nicely. It is sold by SOftware
Bisque.

The best advice I could give is NOT to archive to SBIG format, since this will
make reading your data dependent on a non-standard format which offers no
advantages, which is not supported by all image processing packages, and for
which there is no assurance of long term support. Astronomical images should be
saved in FITS format, which is an international standard supported by all
software, including SBIG's.
