Default Remote Desktop ?

Hi,

I have a laptop to control my telescope but to escape the mosquitoes and
other nasty bugs I want to now control the laptop using my Wifi from my LAN
PC indoors.

Win XP pro has a wonderful feature that is Remote desktop but I can only
control my LAN PC via Wifi from the Laptop but not the other way.

Has anyone experienced this problem and found the solution? Any directions
will be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like either you haven't set up user access on the laptop for RD,
or XP's built-in "firewall" is blocking it?

You probably know this already but I'll mention it anyway: in order for
RD to work you need to be running XP Pro on the server machine (in this
case the laptop) and you need to set up a user with a password on the
laptop - this is the account you log in to via RD.

There are many versions of VNC, all are fairly similar (and generally
compatible if you don't need some of the fancier options). I use VNC
every day and it's fantastic. My favoured version is this one:

Hi,

I've used PCanywhere from Symantec to remotely control one PC from another.
This can be figured to use LAN, WLAN, Modem, Direct & a whole range of other
ways. Its a bit pricey but good. Or you could try a program called PCremote,
excellent piece of software & only 1MB of coding. They offer a 30 day
evaluation. Again it offers 95% of the features of PCanywhere for a fraction
of the cost. This will allow you to nominate one PC as a Host & the other
being the Remote.

Follow this link to review the product & to download the demo or trial
version. (If running under XP, disable the firewall.) I use both products to
remotely control electron microscopes globally. One other point, if you are
going to go Peer to Peer, use TCP-IP settings & let Win2000 or XP
automatically set the IP & Sub Net address for you. ( or e-mail me privately
for details.)

Hope this helps you out.

Regards,

In order to use RD to control the laptop, it has to be enabled...
In order to do that (on the laptop), you right-click "My Computer" in the
"Start"-menu and select "Properties".
Click on the tab "Remote", and check to see that "Allow users to connect..."
is enabled.

That should be it..
(no need to say, that you will have to specific allow a user to access RD,
if that one is not administrator on the laptop?)

If this doesn't solve your problem, please give some more info about what
happens, what you have checked and so..

OK Gurus, on the server I have enabled Remote desktop. Unchecked Windows
internet firewall, disabled WEP. Set up password for administrator.
Internet connection is good.

The wireless is set up as an access point - Not peer to peer. My LAN IP
addresses are DHCP assigned.

The error message is that either Remote desktop is not set up or the network
connections do not allow the connection or the server is too busy to accept
the connection.

I have tried VNC to the same effect. Unable to connect.

A note to VNC users - Remote desktop acts like your are actually in front of
the server whereas VNC is somewhat delayed.

So what my problem ? I'm Getting desperate and gonna run a LAN cable.

Thanks for any advice.

Try not using DHCP on you lan, just to be sure you have the correct IP
addresses.

Simple things like not using a background image, can improve performance
a lot.

I have worked from Czech offices over VNC to computers in Dublin with no
real performance issues, that was with Solaris not XP though.

I've no real knowledge of XP sorry!

Cheers,
~Al
