Philosophy.
It was an insult directed toward people who chastise a company for how

it names its telescopes. The ones who KNOW exactly what "the truth"
and "The Good" are and must demonstrate just how knowledgeable they
are.

Couldn't help it. You set it up. This is what to expect when you post
with some other agenda. My last word as I seldom reply to such posts.

This usenet group provides benefits similar all forms of written
communication.

I listen to expand my knowledge and understanding of aspects of amateur
astronomy that I am not aware of or cannot easily find the answer to
via members of my local club or by internet searches.

Archives in this usenet group provide an almost ten year archive of
posts by many knowledgable amateurs. It is a "super-blog" of record.
This includes either topic posts or links to current and rapidly
changing web material. Others post alerts about real time observational
opportunities, e.g. auroras and geomagnetic storms like the recent
January storm or new objects like McNiel's nebula. Although that
information can had elsewhere, real time developments are available
here in an easily compiled form and are less likely to be missed or
overlooked. Many people post links to their amateur astrophotographs,
which I simply enjoy looking at and which are inspirational.

I lurk, therefore I am. Lurkus hoc, ergo sum. -

I post mostly because the act of writing forces me to assemble what
little astronomy knowledge I have into an organized form. That is one
of the inherent benefits of written communication. Sometimes the act of
writing forces me to confront what I think know, but have not actually
mastered. Sometimes I post in response to newbie inquiries, even where
the answer can be found relatively easily with a usenet group search,
to repay assistance I received here.

I post, therefore I am. Postus hoc, ergo sum. -

There is a cost-benefit trade-off to participating. The cost is the
relative proportion of on-topic content received verses wading through
the posts of net nuts about my supposed need to have my soul saved, how
I need to buy a new green laser, or how I my politics are out of tune
with the far ultra-right wing.

There is an ebb or flow to the proportion of on-topic and off-topic
content. As winter weather sets in, the proportion of off-topic
material increases beginning in November and peaks in March or April.
As warm weather returns and people go back outside, there is an influx
of legitimate newbie inquiries. Off-topic materials decline through
next winter. Like email-spam filters, newsgroup filters are a fact of
internet life.

Since 2000, when I started following this newsgroup, the total number
of posts has declined and the relative total proportion of on- and
off-topic material seems to have increased. I attribute this to the
increase in available "blog" newgroups via yahoo and vendor-based
newsgroups. Like free broadcast TV and pay cable, the availability of
alternative media has resulted in the fractionalization of posting into
more specialized astronomy newgroups. I am not sure if this is a good
or bad development.

I filter, therefore, I am at peace.

Filterus, ergo peaceus. -

Dark Skies. Be well.

I only post a reply when I have had some direct, hands-on experience with
the problem. It bugs me when people post their "opinion" based on what
they have heard from others. The best replies contain links to other
resources on the web that may also shed some light on the problem.
