Observed path of the Sun
https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/grad/solcalc/fig5_0n.gif
Many descriptions of the annual path of the Sun at the Equator in context of the Solstices/Equinoxes included that awful perspective. A reasonable person would immediately recognize that an observer at the Equator can't distinguish between winter/summer as they exist at a latitude which divides the hemispheres. https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/equa...-guinea/malabo It is also a perspective which plagues all other descriptions. A person at the Equator turns at a rate of 1037.5 miles per hour so when they exit the circle of illumination (sunrise) until they re-enter the circle of illumination (sunset) 12 hours later the observer has covered 12,450 miles across the fully illuminated face of the Earth. As there is no meaningful daylight/darkness asymmetry at the Equator, the graphic and the explanations of the North/South path of the Sun are rubbish and disruptive for the technical details of the Earth's motions. |

Observed path of the Sun
There are many of the same false graphics out there so no wonder the Caltech students here never stood a chance -
http://www.cso.caltech.edu/outreach/...DAY/bsfig7.jpg How an observer at the Equator decides whether it is the winter or summer Solstice by the position of the Sun given that they straddle the hemispheres and when it is the winter solstice in the Northern hemisphere or summer solstice in the Southern, they both happen at the same time. This is, of course, all nonsense but obviously whatever it takes to justify celestial sphere observing. The safe cloudy nights forum caters for the limited version of astronomy, an astronomy that never broaches cause and effect with terrestrial sciences since they tried to bypass the central Sun for the motions of the Earth and appealed to circumpolar motion of everything, including the Sun in RA/Dec - http://archive.hokulea.com/images/na...r/ecliptic.gif Again, I understand many are a product of their instruction as students and would not dare question the validity of their certificates and degrees but such is the paper thin difference between genuine astronomy with all its causes and effects and celestial sphere rubbish. |

Observed path of the Sun
The heart does sink sometimes despite seeing the way through all this to the eventual recovery of astronomy. The rise of celestial sphere software was indeed rapid as were descriptions based on that clockwork generated and homocentric view -
https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/grad/s...solarpaths.gif Basically borrowing from the tropic of Cancer/Capricorn and split by the Equator, it escaped into the celestial arena where they even pivot the circle of illumination to suit the Sun over the latitudinal points - https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap170319.html Somebody else must feel something when confronted with such childish notions that were allowed to fester, even in the lifetime of this newsgroup. So where to now ?. |

This is drop-dead first-thing-you-learn in grammar school stuff... |

Like everything else, the graphic is a fraud as are the people who promote it, a notion so abhorrent to reason that it takes really damaged individuals to go along with it - https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap170319.html I take pride in human reasoning but that, that represents something which would break a person's heart as it turns the RA/Dec version of the motion of the Sun into reality. To manipulate imaging in order to promote a pivoting circle of illumination is criminal and especially as it is done through the space agency. As for you Paul, you feel nothing and that has been your problem all along. |

You can see Eastern Africa throughout, they are simply keeping North at the top of each image, which is not "manipulating" anything. Indeed, if they kept the circle of illumination horizontal, do you know what the sequence would show? The North Pole tilting! Ha ha! |

That is out and out fraud but other than it is generated from a celestial sphere ideology there isn't much more that can be said other than it takes a damaged mind not to be sick from the assault on the eyes and mind. |

It is not generated from a celestial sphere ideology, it is generated by a camera on a satellite in geostationary orbit above Africa. You would see the very same thing with your own two eyes if you were up there. |

So one has to understand that it eliminated the rotation of the Earth in order to illustrate its point about the consequences of the Earth's orbital motion. John Savard |
