Default WINNERS from Obama's proposed 2011 budget

Watching the world burn, while NASA takes a long and
platinum-plated safari to the Moon, would certainly 'endear'
the space agency to the American people. Wasting every
last dime for the next twenty years on a useless moon-shelter
would make NASA a national joke. And be a set back
for space exploration like no other. Not just from the
wasted twenty years and wasted money, but mostly
from the loss of trust in an agency that's ....supposed
to be about OUR future.

Not there own.

What about us pro-science liberals who are glad to see Ares get the ax?

I think this is the right move.

I don't. Ares getting the axe is fine with me, but President Obama has
thrown the baby out with the bath water. I still don't know why Orion
couldn't simply be shifted to Delta or Atlas, for example.

Absolutely.

That said, rumor is that a shuttle derived HLV will emerge from the ashes of
this announcement and Orion will continue (without the lunar program). NASA
Spaceflight.com has a story along those lines on its front page today.

Which article are you basing that on? The only article today is on
51L/107. Previous articles are, as they say, Overcome By Events (OBE).

Moon-travel boosters. The budget adds $6 billion to NASA's budget over
five years, extending the International Space Station, but it abandons
the Constellation program to return humans to the moon. Instead, it
directs NASA to invest in the development of U.S. commercial space
taxi services to ferry astronauts to the space station.

Mike, on the left and the right a large share of congress persons
are lawyers. And lawyers largely unschooled in science.
And plenty on the right are anti-science as well and often
have closeted KKK type attitudes. And even the ones
that have other education seem to fail to apply it i.e.
Bill Frist and the Terry Schive (Ms) case as an example.
Her brain was largely gone and it seemed so was his.
Her husband was right. Just look at the CAT scan.

Left to their own devices congress persons would likely try to
declare Pi and E to be the rounded to number of 3
after a conference committee session.

Yeah, note my original objection was limited to Ares. Orion I haven't made
my mind up yet.

Now that Ares I is dead and lunar missions are dead as well, this
requirement could be added back in a "commercial" version of Orion. Don't
think for one minute that the Orion contractors won't propose a "commercial"
version of Orion. They've got to find some way to keep that gravy train
going.

If Orion doesn't need to do a lunar return velocity reentry, then a
major reason to base its design on the Apollo CM vanishes; it doesn't
need the wide (and very heavy) heatshield anymore and a shape more like
the Soyuz descent module would give greater internal volume at lower
weight by having a smaller diameter heatshield for the overall passenger
and cargo capacity of the spacecraft.
Since such a redesign would mean pretty much starting over from scratch,
they might as well go with the manned Dragon capsule variant, as at
least some design work has been done on that.

Since the idiot intends to bankrupt the country, why not at least do
something that'll leave behind an *honorable* legacy? Gene Cernan said
as much this afternoon in an interview, and he's right.

Bush left almost every aspect of the US govt, except for
the military, in disgraceful condition due to either
corruption, incompetence or neglect.
Mostly neglect!

You political rubes....all of you!

America has not just lost it's manned space program.
The military and NASA have been following separate
.....competing....tracks to replace the shuttle.

NASA LOST! Due to ignorantly deciding upon taking
the long expensive and useless track....Moon part deux!
So now we have only one.

The military won, and now has your precious manned
space program. Because as the entire world knows, except
for the few here, only military uses justify putting
people in space.

And that isn't going to change until the commercial
sector invades earth orbit en masse.

So, lower cost to orbit, combined with a NEW market
for space activity would seem to be the logical next
steps.

Y'all know well what my opinion is about solving those
two problems, Space Solar Power. When is anyone
here going to stop pointing fingers, and start pointing
towards a new, more thoughtful, direction for the
future?

This exact time is a golden opportunity for change.

Disregarding your knee jerk partisan comments about the current
administration, this was a program that never should have been approved in
the first place. The program was borne of the political expediency of the
Bush administration with neither the will, proper guidance and funding to
accomplish the vague goals set for it. The booster design was compromised,
flawed and unacceptably dangerous, and the program like most aspects of
NASA's post Skylab manned space program, lacked real vision and is pork of
the worst kind. Congress will put up a fight, but hopefully the
Constellation program and Ares rocket (for manned flight anyway) will get
the ax.

Memorized that did you? it is a leftist false Paradigm with False
attributions and therefore an Illogical conclusion. QED
Note it is the old South Dixiecrat left that still has KKK members in it
that migrated to DC.
To attribute the behavior and beliefs of the Slave holding Dixiecrats is
beyond absurd.
Even the South has reformed except for those involved in Politics still mad
about who won the Civil War and their loss of "freedom" to own slaves.
Marxist-Lenonist-Maoist Bolshevic wannabes are going to have to find a new
excuse. This is not going to fly any more. They rebranded the side who
fought for freedom as the ones denying it.
The Yanks never did have KKK members.
KKK members never did, never will.

Do you really think you get off saying
"And plenty on the right are anti-science as well and often
have closeted KKK type attitudes. And even the ones
that have other education seem to fail to apply it"?

That is demonstrably false... and has as even less credibility than the
Global Warming hoax and the ALGORE invented the Internet claim.
Your bigotry against the "right" as you call it...
is showing.
When did you stop beating your wife? Do you really believe we will fall for
your childish elitist snobbish BS?
Wake up and smell the TEA PARTY.
Trouble is brewing for you and your ilk.

Agreed on that. Once they become Washingtonians, the grey cells are lost to
the religion of socialist politics.

Now if you're one of those looking to keep pushing for
Government control of everything and everyones lives cradle to grave, good
luck with that.

However, Constellation was also a result of the Columbia accident,
after which the CAIB found that NASA should have a clear goal toward
which to work. Previously, NASA had been working toward finishing a
Space Station, to no particular end, just, "we have to get to core
complete by 2004!" President Bush gave it one, albeit poorly funded.
President Obama has removed it, for now, leaving us with a program to
develop technology to no particular end, just "we have to keep the
Station operating until at least 2020!"
