Default How are the giant planets protecting us?

This is a free event at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm on Monday 23 September 2013 at
the Royal Society, London given by Dr Christopher Arridge, a Royal Society
University Research Fellow.

Event details

Jupiter is over 600 million kilometres away from us - how has it helped our
planet to evolve safely? What are the space environments surrounding the
giant planets like? Why are these planets important in the history of our
solar system? Discover the surprising nature of the space surrounding giant
planets, and how this helps protect both them and planet earth.

A recorded audio will be available on this page a few days afterwards.

Cheers, Alastair.

Probes use those large planets for their acceleration and trajectory variations.

Those big planets are helping by attracting and accelerating more stuff to head towards Earth. Fortunately, our planet makes a small target and minimal gravity well, so that the majority of rogue asteroids and planetoids are not as likely to find us.
