NYC EVENTS FOR JUNE 2008
----------------------
John Pazmino
NYSkies Astronomy Inc

www.nyskies.org

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring
enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers are also included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor
know that you learned of its event thru NYC Events.
You may ask for previous NYC Events thru ',
because only the current issue is in the website. It is replaced by
next month's issue.
For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup
forum. Join NYSkies by visiting 'www.nyskies.org/yahoo.htm' and
picking either the email or website option.
All hours are Eastern Daylight Savings Time

General news
----------
Richard Rosenberg clarified that his roundtable at New York
University are internal events, not for the general public. Altho
probably anyone can walk in without incident, he indicated that they
are leaving NYC Events.
Columbia University started its summer lectures with clearsky
stargazing on May 30th. They run every other week thru September. The
sessions begin at 20:30, rather late for a typical City event, so
please mind the hour.
The World Science Festival ends on June 1st, after four days of
storming the City with science-related activities all over Manhattan.
Note that the listings for June 1st may be updated from those in the
May 2008 NYC Events.
Two centers shifted their meeting place in June. Amateur
Observers
Society meets at the Cradle of Aviation, Mitchell Field LI, and not
at
Hofstra University. Astronomical Society of Long Island holds its
meetings at Vanderbilt Planetarium. Both clubs are trying the new
sites for possible future relocation.

Event news
--------
We enjoyed to bonus events in May. On the 21st we attended the
New
York premiere of 'When we left Earth' put on by Discovery Channel.
The
movie was one in a 6-part series to air on nationwide cable TV
starting on June 8th. Please check with your local cable service for
showtimes.
The show was in the Hayden Planetarium and the leFrak Theater. It
featured two astronauts to answer questions and mingle with the
audience, a cocktail reception and a buffet dinner.
On May 26th the Planetarium hosted a JPL presentation about the
Phoenix probe that landed on the previous evening on Mars. The
spacecraft was doing well with initial pictures of the feet, solar
panels, and nearby landscape.
Supporting the formal show by videos and telecasts were several
Mars-themed demonstrations crewed by docents.
We watched the Manhattan Stonehenge sunset starting may 29th from
all over the island, with a bright, quite brilliant, Sun parked in
the
line of east-west streets.
June 1st is the closing of World Science Festival. This was an
orgy of science lectures, exhibits, shows all over Manhattan from May
29th thru June 1st. Most events had a fee of $15 or so but there is,
on the 31st, a free street fair of science centers of the City and
surrounds.
You'll be in Hamilton Heights MH on the 1st and 2nd of June, yes?
That's when Alexander Hamilton's house, the Hamilton Grange, is
trucked from its present site to a new one in St Nicholas Park. The
shift puts it in a more contextual setting, still within Hamilton's
colonial property limits.
June continues the 2008 season at Governors Island. Get the free
ferry at Battery Marine terminal. Mind well that there are very
limited services and facilities on the island. Bring lunch and water.
Hint: stop at the restrooms in the adjacent Staten Island Ferry depot
before going to the island.
Friday-Sunday is general visiting, like for any other park. Boats
runs hourly 10:00-17:00. Wednesday-Thursday have only two runs, 10:00
and 13:00. These meet guides for a walking tour of the island with a
return boat two hours later. The island is closed on Monday and
Tuesday.
June offers two glatt noveboracan tours. The 15th is a ride on
one
of the NY Transit Museum's vintage trains to celebrate 50 years of
service on the Rockaways. The ride begins on Manhattan (place given
with registration), stops at the Museum for a hour or so, than trots
off to the Rockaways.
On the 18th the American Museum of Natural History
circumnavigates
Manhattan on a Circle Line cruise ship. A Museum geologist/historian
explains how New York was created and grew. You'll learn about the
Ice
Ages, volcanos, American Revolution, earthquakes (yes, Manhattan
gets
them). skyscrapers,

Sky news
------
Weather was so-so in May with a few really clear nights toward
the
end of the month. Most clear nights were slicked with haze or high
cloud. On the other hand, the sky was generally quite steady, letting
higher power be applied to Saturn and double stars.
So far, in this first month of the City's Milky Way spring season
there were no sightings. 2008 is the first formal spring season for
viewing the Milky Way. It runs from May 1 thru June 30. Do inspect
the
sky in owl hours for possible Milky Way. The summer Milky Way is high
in the east and south then and could be spotted on the darker nights
from the City.
Mars passed thru the Pleiades in late May under cloudy and rainy
skies. He's chugging eastward toward Regulus, which he passes on July
2nd. While he is only a tiny pink dot in small scopes, he's the
cynosure of attention because of the Phoenix craft sitting on his
north pole.
Saturn rules in the high south and southwest. In thinner steadier
overhead air, he is a glorious target for any telescope. The rings
continue to close slowly, edging toward the zero-inclination phase
coming in 2009.
In the south is Porrima, the binary that swallowed up into a
single star in 2005-2006. It's separating gradually to allow smaller
scopes to resolve. By summer, just about medium scopes may see two
distinct stars in Porrima. Get high power on it. Try it!
