Default Plans for V-2 launched Earth satellite before 1950

There where a number of studies done before 1950 about how to orbit an
artificial satellite about the earth. If I recall correctly von Braun
presented a number of options using a V-2 and existing vehicles (sort
of a spin off of Bumper).
I have the memory or having seen a photo spread of a mock up of the
upper stages, at White Sands? Somewhere else?
These might not have been von Braun's proposal, but I believe the
booster was to be a V-2.
I could swear that it was Willy Ley who did an article about this with
the photo; I thought this was in an issue of GALAXY magazine in the
50's, but I can not pin it down, I may be hallucinating!
Anyone recall this?
