but not one of them closer than Alpha Centauri, apparently, so the textbooks aren't obsolete:

....indeed not, as existing surveys that attempted to provide a complete census
of white dwarfs within 40 parsecs of the Sun remain valid, so any new ones found
are further away than that. More significantly, many already known now have
accurate distances to them.
