MEDIA ADVISORY: 05-32

MEDIA CREDENTIAL DEADLINES FOR SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION STS-114 EXTENDED

Following the postponement of the Space Shuttle Return-to-Flight
Mission STS-114 from May to July, NASA is extending the deadline for
news media organizations to seek credentials for on-site coverage of
the event at the Kennedy and Johnson Space Centers and Dryden Flight
Research Center.

The Space Shuttle Discovery is currently targeted for launch from the
Kennedy Space Center in Florida during a window between July 13 and
July 31. Discovery is scheduled to land at Kennedy at the conclusion
of the mission about 11 days later. However, if the weather or other
conditions prevent a landing in Florida, the shuttle could be
diverted to the primary back-up landing site at NASA Dryden Flight
Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

NASA DRYDEN FLIGHT RESEARCH CENTER, EDWARDS, CALIF.:

News media representatives interested in on-site coverage of a
potential shuttle landing at NASA Dryden at Edwards and not already
accredited must submit a request for accreditation to the NASA Dryden
public affairs office by the following deadlines:

Representatives of non-U.S. media, regardless of citizenship â?" June 1
U.S. citizens representing domestic media â?" July 7 U.S. citizens
representing domestic media must furnish: full name, date of birth,
place of birth, media organization, the last six digits of their
social security number and driverâ?Ts license number, including the
state of issue.

Representatives of foreign media must furnish: In addition to the
above, persons representing foreign media, regardless of citizenship,
must furnish current citizenship, visa or passport number and
expiration date, and alien registration number if a resident alien.

For accreditation, media representatives must work for a legitimate,
verifiable news-gathering organization. No substitutions of other
media members will be allowed. Requesters must submit full
information for any potential alternates in the original request.

Media personnel should fax a request for accreditation on their
company letterhead to (661) 276-3566. E-mail requests are acceptable
for media representatives who have been on-site at NASA Dryden within
the past year, and should be sent to
.
All requests must include the requestor's phone number and e-mail
address for follow-up contact. Media that submitted accreditation
requests by the former deadlines do NOT need to reapply.

If a decision is made to land the Space Shuttle at NASA Dryden, notice
could be very short. News organizations should consider accrediting
Los Angeles-based staff who could travel to Dryden relatively
quickly. Limited facilities will be available at Dryden to accredited
media representatives. For further information, phone the Dryden
Public Affairs Office at (661) 276-3449.

NASA'S KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA: Journalists not already
accredited for Shuttle launch and landing activities at Kennedy need
to submit requests from May 30 to June 10 via:
https://media.ksc.nasa.gov

Once accreditation is approved, media will receive confirmation via
e-mail with details about covering the launch, mission and landing.
Credentials will be honored during the STS-114 mission at Kennedy,
Johnson Space Center, Houston, and Dryden Flight Research Center,
Calif.

NASA'S JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, HOUSTON, TEXAS:

Media can either present STS-114 mission credentials from Kennedy or
obtain Johnson credentials by calling the center's newsroom at:
281/483-5111. Media planning only to cover the mission from Johnson,
and not attend events at Kennedy, should apply only at Johnson. The
deadlines for submitting accreditation requests for credentials at
Johnson a

- June 13: representatives of non-U.S. media, regardless of
citizenship
- July 6: U.S. media who are U.S. citizens Media covering the mission
from Johnson using Kennedy credentials must contact the newsroom by
July 6 to arrange workspace, phone lines and other logistics. Johnson
is responsible for credentialing media in the event of a Shuttle
landing at White Sands Space Harbor, N.M. If a landing is imminent at
White Sands, credentials will be arranged.
