China to build space station

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- China has announced plans to construct its
own permanently manned space station.

The Australian newspaper said the Thursday announcement followed the
safe return to earth this week of China's first astronaut.

The director of the China Manned Space Program's engineering office,
Xie Mingbao, said, "The inaugural manned space flight is the first
step of China's space program." He said the second step will be
achieving "space walking," as well as rendezvous docking of
spacecraft.

The third step, he said, will be to develop a permanently manned space
station.
