On December 5, the 5th Combat Command of the 4th French Armored
Division and
five tabors of Moroccan Goums, under the command of Brigadier General

Schlesser, were attached to the Division. This force moved into the
Aubure
area, east of St. Marie, and relieved the 141st Infantry which was then
moved north to the area occupied by the rest of the Division. On
December 6
the Division front line ran from Selestat on the north to Guemar and
Ostheim, thence to Mittelwihr and to Hill 351 south of Riquewihr, a
front 20
kilometers long, flanked on the right by an open stretch covered only
by the
36th Reconnaissance Troop.

After all the preliminaries had been completed, it was the weather that
defeated the planned attack. Winter rains caused the III to flood its
banks,
the entire Alsace Plain becoming a vast swampland. Crossing the river
was
out of the question-nothing could move off the roads in the valley.
Furthermore, the movement of French troops from the south had been
slower
than anticipated. The Corps commander therefore decided to postpone the
attack until December 15 and swing the main effort to the 36th Division
right with a view of attacking Colmar from the west.

From the 2nd of December to the 6th the only pressure on the Germans
had
been exerted by the 36th. Their debouchment out of Ribeauville and
seizure
of the vineyard-covered hills overlooking Colmar so alarmed the Germans

thrown from the far side of the Rhine. It was apparent that the Germans

In light of the mounting German opposition and will to attack, the
Division
situation was not good. It was over extended and deployed with the
Vosges
Mountains at its back-only two precarious mountain roads traversed this
obstacle. Its position lacked depth. To improve this, particularly on

open right flank, the 141st was given the mission of taking Kientzheim
and
Sigolsheim. The attack started off well, Company B capturing Hill 351,
which
had been lost the day before, and the leading platoons of Company A
getting
a foothold in Sigolsheim. The 2nd Battalion, however, could not get
into
Kientzheim. A tragic mistake by our own Tank Destroyers who fired into
Company B from the rear forced them off Hill 351, leaving the two
platoons
of Company A cut off in Sigolsheim. All day on the 10th the fight
raged.
Hill 351 was retaken but the detachment of Company A was lost.

Fatigued to exhaustion by its continued struggle, the Division
nevertheless
had practically no reserves. The 2nd Battalion, 143rd, had been
assembled in
Ribeauville and the 3rd Battalion, 142nd, was in Bergheim and St.
Hippolyte.
All other elements were in contact with the enemy and large stretches
of the
front were covered only by patrols.

French had North African units both before the occupation and after the
capture of Casablanca, but I doubt they were larger than

The Man in djellabas and turbans. They were carrying American M1903
Springfield rifles and some were leading lop-eared mules heavily
burdened with machine guns and supplies. And many of them carried more
personal weapons--vicious-looking knives.

Bringing up the rear of the column was the reconnaissance platoon--a
couple of dozen tribesmen mounted on the tough little Barb horses
native to Morocco. The whole parade looked like something out of the
Arabian Nights--one almost expected to see a flying carpet go by in
aerial support.

That was our introduction to the Moroccan Goumiers--although we'd been
hearing about them since we arrived on the Mediterranean shores six
months before. Recruited from the primitive hill tribes of Morocco's
Atlas Mountains, the Goumiers eventually fought against the Germans in
Tunisia, Sicily, Corsica, Italy, France and Germany and quickly became
known for their aggressiveness and ferocity and their particular skill
in mountain warfare. In Italy, 12,000 strong, they swarmed over the
forbidding Aurunci range (which no one thought could be penetrated by
any sizable force) to spearhead the French Expeditionary Corps in
turning the German flank in Operation Diadem, the final drive on Rome.
Their later exploits in the Vosges Mountains in France and the drive to
the Rhine and beyond were equally sensational. They ended the war,
triumphant, on the banks of the Danube.

In the next few months in Corsica we came to know the Goumiers and to
admire them, but because of their reputation for savagery we were, at
first, somewhat nervous around them. They were friendly enough, but
there were a few contretemps. Two of our batteries provided the
antiaircraft defense for the airfield at Borgo, a few miles south of
Bastia, where the Goumiers were on security duty. Relations between the
Americans and the Moroccans were fine--in the daytime. At night,
however, our people complained that the Goumiers would somehow slip
silently past the sentries, wiggle under the tent flaps and raid the
barracks bags of the sleeping Americans, taking anything they wanted.

"I don't know how they did it," a sergeant remarked in wonder, "but we
never heard a damn thing!"

At our request, however, and luckily before someone was shot, their
officers quickly put an end to these typically Berber shenanigans.

Four Moroccan engines served in the Allied forces during World War II.
They specialised in night raiding operations, and fought mainly against
the forces of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany during 1940-45.

Tunisia, 1942-43

General Mark Wayne Clark mentioned the Goumiers in his account of how
the Corps Expéditionaire Français (CEF or FEC) broke
through the Gustav Line, in May 1944, during the Italian campaign:

In spite of the stiffening enemy resistance, the 2nd Moroccan
Division penetrated the Gustave [sic] Line in less than two
day’s fighting. The next 48 hours on the French front
were decisive. The knife-wielding Goumiers swarmed over the hills,
particularly, and General Juin’s entire force showed
an aggressiveness hour after hour that the Germans could not withstand.
Cerasola, San Giorgio, Mt. D’Oro, Ausonia and Esperia
were seized in one of the most brilliant and daring advances of the war
in Italy... For this performance, which was to be a key to the success
of the entire drive on Rome, I shall always be a grateful admirer of
General Juin and his magnificent FEC.

The following observations are attributed to an officer from the U.S.
26th Infantry Regiment, which fought alongside Goumiers in Italy:

Two companies of Goums, the 51st Goums under Captain Lucasseau, and
one from the 2nd Tabor under a Corsican captain, Captain Rivaggioni,
were stationed next to our CP, and these had sent out two raiding
parties the same night. The route of our attacking battalion had been
explained to the two captains lest any mix-up in the dark occur. Mostly
mountain men from Morocco, these silent, quick-moving raiders were
excellent at raids, and in surprise attacks. How successful they had
been was attested by the two officers who had command of the companies
of the Goumiers. The companies lacked most of the clothing, equipment
and weapons necessary for warfare. Several raids had remedied that.
Inspection of their clothing revealed a good many German articles of
clothing under their conventional brown and white vertical striped
robes. Their rifles were mixed German and Italian, with a few old
French rifles firing clips of four. Mess equipment, and a good deal of
the food was also of enemy origin, as were the knives, pistols,
blankets and toilet articles. From questioning of the Italian
prisoners, it was evident that they had either heard or experienced the
merciless raids of the Goums, and they wanted no part of them. Part of
the Goums’ success lay in their silence as they moved
forward, and in their highly perfected art of camouflage. One anecdote
ran that one warrior had so successfully camouflaged himself all day in
full sight of the Germans that a German officer had wandered over to
what he thought was a bush, and had urinated on the motionless head of
the Moroccan soldier who bore the trial well, but who marked that
particular officer down for special attention that night. Goums did not
take any prisoners, and it was well-known to the Germans and Italians
what befell anyone who ran afoul of those Moroccans. There was
certainly no desire to have our battalion tangle with either of the two
raiding parties sent out the same night."[1]
