"R" in Soviet missile numbering?
Alan Erskine wrote: Raket (Rocket)? I think that's it...Chelomei's designs had UR prefixes for "Universal Rocket" and the ex-German Peenemunde design bureau used G for Groettrup- its leader....here's some data about the designations in detail: http://www.astronautix.com/articles/rustions.htm As one would expect from the Soviets, it's complex and convoluted. Raket (Rocket)? Raketa. It means both "rocket vehicle" and "reactively propelled missile." (A cruise missile is a "krylataya raketa," "winged missile.") |

BTW, the R in RD (as in RD-170) doesn't stand for Raketnyy. It's Reaktivnyy Dvigatel', "reaction engine." |
