few somewhat-serious, partially-worked-out proposals for making the
first expedition a one-way trip."

I don't think I've seen any of these proposals worked out in any sort of
detail, and I'm not sure that any of them were entirely serious (althoug
several were deliberately intended as being thought-provoking.)

A lifetime supply of food and
spare parts actually weighs less than a fueled return vehicle. You
get far more exploration and science for your money. And it
eliminates all concerns about biological back contamination.
