.. . . so make sure to toss him a buck when you see him sleeping on a
steam grate in Dupont Circle this winter.

Yeah, right. I for one don't fear for Mr. Goldin's ability to find work.

Or at least a paycheck...

He was unable to agree with the trustees over the
duties and responsibilities - specifically where his would
end and where the Chancellor's role would take over.

....I, for one, wouldn't interview him for the position of ****
shoveller, much less hire him for the job even if he were starving.

To fully understand this, you have to know that the Chancellor, John
Silber, is one of -- perhaps *the* -- most contentious people in Boston.
He is adamant in his views, refusing to budge on what he sees as
necessary, regardless of what other think. He, for example, belives that
high school diplomas should be withheld from students who aren't fluent
in English and basic mathematics. He is happy to flunk BU students with
poor grades. If you are ignorant about history, he'll tell you that to
your face. His campaign for governor several years ago was a disaster
because he was too honest and open about stating his opinions rather
than saying what would have gotten him the most votes.

You say all that as though it's a bad thing. And he's worse than Dan
Goldin because...?

Well, it's questionable that two highly opinionated people would peacefully
coexist without any common framework of even basic mutual respect, with
each already firing significant salvos before even Day 1 of the new job.

It's like watching Jerry Jones vs. Jerry Jones, and neither particularly
wanted to cede control to the other. Ultimately, I guess the university
decided that one was more important than the other. Mr. Silber clearly has
the long-term relationship as well as existing significant 'pull' in all
the right places, whereas Mr. Goldin was the newcomer... so it wasn't
really a big surprise regarding the outcome.

Without something as basic as a clearly delineated line of responsibility
between the two job functions, it would likely have had turned out to be a
prescription of continual strife at the very top, undercutting the
university's mission and ability to keep dirty laundry out of the public
eye.

The two just don't mix -- they're literally like hypergolic fuel... combust
(and rather explosively) upon contact.
