Used Kendrick's Laser Collimator for an SCT?
Has anyone read Kendrick's comments re. the laser collimator as used for
an sct at the url below? http://kendrick-ai.com/astro/misconceptions.html I've read pros and cons in the past comparing the laser collimator vs. a star test and still like the idea of a test I can use on cloudy days, or just because it's "there"! |

I've read pros and cons in the past comparing the laser collimator vs. a
star test and still like the idea of a test I can use on cloudy days, or just because it's "there"! I read the thing. I am not a pro at SCT collimation. However I was not impressed with the discussion. Anytime I hear the claim that anything other than the star test can give the best collimation for any scope, I am dubious. Wonder what Uncle Rod had to say.... jon |

"Jon Isaacs" wrote in message ... Wonder what Uncle Rod had to say.... jon Uncle Rod, as he's stated here before, prefers the star test. However, I've owned a couple of the Kendrick SCT collimators and they perform pretty much exactly as indicated in the documentation on the Kendrick site. I'm not sure about the 5 times greater accuracy claimed by Kendrick but they are at least as accurate as a star test as long as you follow the directions precisely. I don't own one of these now. I've sold both the ones I owned to fund other projects. My scope doesn't need collimating very often since I almost never move it. I will most likely buy one of these again at some point in the future if I have the extra cash lying around. Ray Porter |

Actually, a secondary reason for using a laser collimator is the knowledge that, at age 70 time is rapidly moving along, and he/she who dies with the most toys wins ;- |

Used Kendrick's Laser Collimator for an SCT?
I've owned C8 for ten years without need for collimation due to the
round star test in and out of focus. One day my friend shows me his laser collimator and make me interested in testing with this equipment. After inserting the collimator without diagonal, I found that the laser dot did not center which meaned I need to adjust my secondary mirror. After making the adjustment and make the laser dot center, I found that the image get noticeable worse than before! Eventually, I have to adjust the secondary mirror without the collimator and use only star test method; and be able to make the image tack sharp again. I am also able to collimate my friend newly bought C9.25 without the collimator within 20 minutes, even with my 2nd time experience. The lesson is, I don't need collimator and the chance of need to re-collimate is very low. Chote Dan Wenz wrote in message ... Chote A good point but you apparently didn't look at the instructions on the Kendrick web site. If you use a laser collimator on an SCT in the same manner you would with a Newtonian, you will most likely badly decollimate your scope. Check out the Kendrick site if you're interested in the correct way to collimate an SCT with a laser. As to your point, the fact that my scope almost never needs collimation since I don't move it very often, is why I've sold my Kendrick laser. However, I may buy another in the future once some other projects are finished. It's handy to be able to achieve a really good collimation when the weather doesn't allow a good star collimation.
