Could be on to something there. Maybe add a monkey like the old organ
grinders and charge 2 bits a solar prom.

Dennis, what got your panties (or your depends) in a bunch? At least the guy
is thinking...better than begging for car parts on SAA. I see you've caught
the jerk virus too. Stay out of the heat...

The one big thing Doink doesn't understand (nothing new there) is that if
he is going to be on a street corner (like someone I could name does
offen), he can NOT charge a fee for looking. To do so put him into the
area of being a Seller/Peddler and that means a State Tax permit to start
with ($1,500 deposit too), then a selling permit from the city and/or
county and that means he's going to have to have $100,000 in libilty
insuance coverage too. Only if he OWNS his own land could he set up and
charge and even then he'd need the tax permit and the insuance too.

As a Sidewalk Astronomer, I set up on a Public street corner and I never
charge, I have a Donation cup that people can put something into if they
want, but I do NOT EVER ask for a fee. I am not insured, as I am standing
on one of the rights we all in the USA have, of peacefull assby and I
don't block the sidewalk either, I have my scope near the street itself.
As such I can do what I do and no one can stop me (as one guy has found
out!)

I have been told that either in palmdale or Sagus, there is a shop that
sells telescopes and they have a set up for sky viewing and they DO
charge. I've een told this 3 times, so it must be true.

But no one would ever get rich setting up to offer views of the skys, as a
lot of the people that stop at my scopc have no money or just a few pennys
of lose change to offer and many times I'll tell'm to keep the money and
give'm good views of the sky anyway.

Hi:

Which is what I prefer. Certainly, if this guy wants to charge 50
cents--or 50 dollars--a look, that's his bidness. But...I
dunno...chargng kids to look at the sky just doesn't set well with me,
though it's been done often enough, and probably has got quite a few
people interested in astronomy.

As for money making potential? Don't quit your day job. ;-)

be
seen is a good idea?

There are folks who do various science and nature programs for schools and
such, but doing that would involve, I would think, more than simply showing
the Sun, and perhaps something a bit better than a PST. You'd probably want
to do a nice program about the Sun and then provide some fine views, with
photos and/or video as backup in case of bad weather (or in addition to the
viewing).

I think you are asking the wrong crowd about this. Most of us amateur
astronomers do a lot of public outreach for free. Long ago our club held
public and club star parties, but found we just invited people to the club
events too, so all our activities are public, and cost nothing. Only the
seriously interested guests stay as late as we do, so we get in our own
observing too.

Sharing the sky with people is a lot of fun, and a rewarding experience. It
is also a learning experience - if you can explain something well to a
novice, then you really understand it.

I read a comment here that folks don't appreciate free stuff. Based on my
experience with public star parties, I say that's utter hogwash!

Clear skies, Alan

Just try to get hired by a Planetarium or even hired as a volunteer!
Not easy, not here in Phillyland!

Are there actually two Doinks? A Good Doink and his Evil Twin? Just
when I thought...well...sigh...that's what I get for thinkin'.

Read "A Scanner Darkly" by Philip Dick .. or see the movie out Friday.
One Doink would do the trick

Hey, Doink: I've met Dennis and know him. So, based on the above,
I know which of you is a jerk .. and it's not Dennis.

Occasionally I open my filter wall temporarily to see what sort of
creepy lifeforms are still posting to SAA. In any event, in case
it escaped your limited ability to perceive, the message below was
a reply to Rod's message, not one of yours.

museums and

Well, let's see. The last I heard, museums and planetariums cost a lot
of money to build, staff, and operate. They have fabulous facilities
which we cannot match. Even "free" ones are funded by taxpayers or by
some massive private endowment. In other words, without money they
would likely cease to exist. They're also staffed by full-time
professionals who deserve and need to be paid.

You, on the other hand, are merely some shmoe with a dinky solar
telescope (and so am I, for that matter). You may or may not know much
about how it works or what it reveals. Many people looking through it
will say "I only see red" and could well consider themselves bilked if
you charge them.

Therefore, I urge you not to heed this odd argument, and not charge.
After all, you bought the PST for your own enjoyment, and if you spread
that around a little it won't cost you an extra thing.
