Successful Clinton-era X space projects? (was X-43A flightdelayed.)
Okay, we've got X-33, X-34, X-37, X-38, and X-43 that've either failed or had big-time problems. Were there any X-type space-related projects during the Clinton era that succeeded? Only DC-X. Damn Clinton for pushing and signing into law the "Make Aeronautical Engineering Really Difficult For Big Stupid Bureaucracies" Act of 1993! Damn him! And how did he find the time while getting all those blow jobs in the Oval Office? Now George W. Bush, with the "Christian Nutballs and Big Business In Orbit" initiative, will truly open up the heavens, from which real Americans can look down upon liberals, gays, eco-nazis, and other traitorous losers left squirming on the filthy Earth. :_ |

Bush, in contrast, has had plenty of time to develop the "Christian Nutballs and Big Business In Orbit" initiative. This will truly open up the heavens, from which real Americans can look down upon liberals, gays, eco-nazis, the National League, and other traitorous losers left squirming on the filthy Earth. :_ |

Well yeah, but it had nothing to do with weapons systems. I admit I came in late on this thread. I was a DC-X program fan, even though it was clear the program was doomed from the start. It never had enough funding or support from the establishment. A simple SSTO vehicle blew way too far against the prevailing winds. I believe that, given the chance, the program could have continued into the DC-Y phase orbital demonstrator. Would the program have ever led to a vehicle that could put payload into orbit? There's no way to know without doing it again. I haven't checked lately, but I think this link is still good for those of you into nostalgia: http://media.armadilloaerospace.com/DCX/ Dosco |

Well yeah, but it had nothing to do with weapons systems. Quite the contrary - while not a weapons system itself, a high-flight-rate reusable SSTO was considered a good way to deploy a space-based weapons system. Hence DC-X. Don't let your nostalgia for DC-X cloud your judgment about its origins. It never would have been funded in the first place without the need for an affordable deployment method for the space-based components of SDI. The fact that (as with the V-2) some proponents of DC-X saw non-military applications for it does not change its essential nature. -- JRF Reply-to address spam-proofed - to reply by E-mail, check "Organization" (I am not assimilated) and think one step ahead of IBM. |

The DC-X program with its planned but never carried out DC-Y and DC-1 follow-ons were envisioned to launch those weapons systems. I think calling it a "Star Wars" program since it originally came out of SDIO is a fair assessment. |

I think calling it a "Star Wars" program since it originally came out of SDIO is a fair assessment. DC-X was a McDonnell Douglas program. It's true that the funding came from SDIO, but only because the NASA powers of the time didn't think the program could get anywhere. Gen. Graham convinced the white house otherwise and so funding was pulled out of the SDIO budget to fund DC-X. Does that make it a "star wars" program? Define it however you like. DC-X was a ******* child that no one but the project team from McDonnell Douglas wanted to acknowledge. Dosco |
