You mentioned that you are new to all this (I think to Jon?)

actually, I meant astronomy

.. s.a.a.
has been a great place to learn. Yes, we have our resident oddballs,
but after a while you learn to deal with them. It's worth sticking around
and reading.

I've been sticking around. I'm not new to the Usenet, just this group. I
have noticed, however, some exceptionally rude postings from time to time.

can't argue with that.

...

This one, for example, from "The Idiot's Menace":

You need help naming your cat, eh? What are you, retarded or something?

Not as off-topic as it sounds.

Not as off-topic, but stupid. Look at the ocean of followups:

Now *that's* what I call quality bandwidth for sci.astro.amateur.

What a wild bunch you have, here.

Yup, some people seem to hang around here with the sole purpose
to rile people up or simply to offend. Quite sad (pathetic, or
perhaps pathological?) how they crave attention. After a while
these posters (and other resident cooks) become obvious, and
you'll learn to ignore their posts. Along the same line, you'll
recognize who tries to make useful contributions and always try
to read their posts. I could name names .. but I'm not :-)

Anyways, clear skies, and let's hear how those binoculars work
out for you once you get a chance to try them out.
