what do mainstream astronomers believe, geoffery

The universe is expanding more rapidly than the stars can pump out
optical light. This doesn't really get rid of the background, just
redshifts it to where it can't be seen optically.

C Some mysterious mechanism sucks the energy out of light and takes
it out of the universe altogether. Dust won't do this because dust
would just heat up and glow itself.
