James Oberg wrote an article in 1982 about how a lot of Soviet UFO
sightings were actually secret rocket tests and test warhead reentries:

If you would like to see just how unearthly a missile's exhaust can look
in the nighttime sky, take a gander at the pictures on this page of the
aerial phenomena generated by a Minuteman III launch from Vandenburg in
2002; particularly the last few, which would do credit to "Close
Encounters Of The Third Kind": http://www.freqofnature.com/photos/mmiii/

I saw this launch from Los Angeles..it really amazed and confused me,
because I couldn't figure out what I was looking at. My best guesse
was that it might have been coloured smoke from a local event, lit
from beneath (although with the air quality here I should have been
able to see the lighting) -- but my assumption of scale was way off.

Later that night I found out from the Internet what it was that I had
seen, but I can well imagine the kinds of conclusions others might
jump to.

Hi Pat:

Yes, a lot of Vandenberg missile launches are mistaken for UFOs. For some
examples of how unusual some of those launches can look, check out the
Vandenberg launch photos on my web site at
http://www.spacearchive.info/library.htm.

By the way, the guy who runs www.freqofnature.com is located about 5 miles
east of me.

Regards,

Brian
