Build your own lunar space ship by mixing & matching...
Boeing has kindly provided lots of images for implementing the Bush
plan--make your own space ship! http://boeingmedia.com/images/search...roduct_id=1525 These graphics were provided at no extra cost to the US taxpayer. There appear to be some inconsistencies with these images. For example, it looks like the autonomous cargo vehicle that supposedly serves a cargo function on the Lunar space station connects to the Hab and Crew Control modules through its heat shield...hmmm. Doesn't look like a lot went into this... Tom Merkle |

On Mon, 26 Jan 2004 10:38:13 GMT, in a place far, far away,
(Christopher) made the phosphor on my monitor glow in such a way as to indicate that: Looks like Boeing is getting it's oar in early in the off-chance that the Bush adminstration likes its concepts to grants it some research funding. Boeing is already funded for this, as is Lockmart. |

Tom Merkle wrote: http://boeingmedia.com/images/search...roduct_id=1525 This is a shameless attempt to inflate expectations with inflatable modules. Don't worry, no moon base will actually come of it. It would make the space station look good in comparison. These graphics were provided at no extra cost to the US taxpayer. Yes, the glossy brochure is always free. Cough, cough. Doesn't look like a lot went into this. So why not? Better example of crackpottedness: the "lunar module" appears to be an orbital hab with an orbital resource module and nice thick legs attached. Riding that much mass all the way down to the lunar surface would take a LOT of fuel. I approve of the inflateable LM, however. That's essentially what Apollo had. Tom Merkle |

Doesn't look like a lot went into this... Tom Merkle 1) Just because the cargo module has a heat shield for the earth return mission dosn't mean it needs one for other missions. If it's going to spend it's life as part of a lunar station, the heat shield is pretty much wasted mass. Note that the rendering of the luna station depicts that part of the station with a medium gey that is different from the dark tone it uses elsewhere for heat shields. 2) It is practical to put a hatch in a heat shield. The Russian TKS capsule and the prototype MOL Gemini had them, and worked OK. And of course, both Shuttle and Buran Have or had a number of hatches in the TPS. Will McLean |

If you want an extended stay on the moon, you will need something bigger than a LM cabin. This is a not unreasonable solution to that need. The taxi role would presumably be filled by a different vehicle. Will McLean |
