Crew Repairs Oxygen Generation System

Onboard the International Space Station on Friday, the Expedition 9 crew
successfully returned an oxygen generating system to operation. The Elektron
unit, which recycles wastewater into oxygen, had experienced problems for
almost two weeks while the crew and engineers in Russia's Mission Control
Center diagnosed and resolved the problem. While it was off, the Station
atmosphere was repressurized using oxygen from a docked Progress spacecraft.

Commander Gennady Padalka and NASA ISS Science Officer Mike Fincke have
started preparing for the end of their mission. During the week, they tested
communication systems aboard the Soyuz spacecraft that will return them to
Earth next month.

Padalka and Fincke also performed science investigations during the week,
including the Advanced Diagnostic Ultrasound in Microgravity (ADUM)
experiment. ADUM is studying the ability of Station crewmembers to perform
advanced ultrasound examinations after using a computer-based training
program. This experiment could have widespread applications in emergency and
rural healthcare situations on Earth.
