Dark matter gets the boot again
On a sunny day (Mon, 17 Sep 2012 21:36:18 -0500) it happened Lofty Goat

It doesn't say there's no dark matter. -- Goat What it REALLY is saying is that an other so called 'proof' of dark matter has been falsified. More to follow. The whole 'dark matter' **** started by observing the speed anomaly of the outer spiral arms of galaxies. Of course those speeds do not match orbital speeds, because those arms are not 'in orbit', it is spit out matter from the central core of the galaxy (like a garden sprinkler). Until astrophysicks lets go of the current concept (alias flat earth, or exactly what it is not), every silly theory build by constructing 'dark matter', 'dark force', Dart Vader etc, will be one by one shot down and booted out the door. Hey that felt good. |

Hey that felt good. That is because that is how Science works. Eventually, they will get back to the assumptions that created Dark Matter in the first place, take careful evaluation of all the normal matter we have found, reevaluate the decision to pick the center of a galaxy as having "no Dark Matter" and calibrating mass-to-luminosity in a region we know is swept clear. Jan Panteltje writes: Dark-matter hope fades in microwave haze: http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/...microwave-haze The preprint is at http://arxiv.org/abs/1208.5483 The spectral index of the radiation (given in unusual units in the paper abstract) is consistent with synchrotron radiation. There are lots of processes going on in and near the Galactic center. I'm surprised dark matter annihilation was near the top of anyone's list of likely candidates for the haze. Maybe it just got the most publicity. -- Help keep our newsgroup healthy; please don't feed the trolls. Steve Willner Phone 617-495-7123 Cambridge, MA 02138 USA |

Probably because there is a heavy desire by many to see Dark Matter (and specifically the WIMP's) succeed as a theory, that they get myopic in their analysis, stop even looking for other explanations. Kind of like a police force that gets convinced of someone's guilt, that they stop even trying to look for alternative explanations. Yousuf Khan |

People get funded to look for "dark matter". The beauty of it is, it is an unscientific hypothesis; it can't be refuted. Someone else says modified theory of Gravity. They get called cranks by the dark matter majority which has a vested interest in seeing that their golden goose is not debunked. Scientist proposing alternative theories don't get funded because the government putz who gives the funding is getting pressure due to political pressure from a congressmen who is getting donations from "scientist" studying dark matter. Then the university has a "research department" that handles the funding. These are the assholes who are behind the term "publish or perish". A scientist in the physics department may be stuck teaching undergrad physics, a job made unpleasant by diversity other PC rules. He may have the coveted research position. To keep that job is a vicious circle: he has to be funded and he has to publish. One doesn't happen without the other. Such is the sad state of scientific research in the western world. |

Of course, that the "western world" has recently been corrupted by funding does not negate the western world's past achievements nor does it mean good programs don't manage to be funded if there is no political opposition to them. Your primary fallacy is a non-sequitor. You also are assuming that assuming the consequent in my argument is logical, and it is a fallacy. I've explained why certain non-sciences like AGW, dark matter, string theory and so on get funded despite the fact they are in contradiction of the data or based on a hypothesis that cannot be falsified. |
