Default QC 3000 pro modification

What is the idea behind modifying a QC for telescpe viewing? Do you
actually turn it into a prime focus instrument by removing the lense?

There are two sorts of webcam modifications. You are talking about the
optical one, which allows the camera to be used at the telescope focus.
There are also a variety of electronic modifications that have been
developed to expose various features such as longer exposure times.

Usually there is some sort of a mechanical modification as well, such as
the addition of a 1.25" barrel, so the camera can be easily mated to a
telescope.

What modification do you have and how can I get instructions?

I've only made optical and mechanical mods, since I have better cameras
for longer exposures. Instructions for modding a QC4000 are he
http://www.cloudbait.com/projects/qc4000.html . However, this is several
years old, and I don't know how the cameras have changed. Still, it
should give some idea of what's involved for almost any webcam.

ok but it isn't detailed. How do I remove the lense?

Seems pretty detailed to me. Step 1: "Remove the base and privacy
shutter. Open the camera by removing the single screw located on one
side. Remove the lens by unscrewing it from the plastic structure on the
PC board. Click to see a larger image."

Pretty simple afterall....what about that glass or plastic covering over the
CCD? Should that come off somehow?

That is an IR blocking filter. If you are using reflective optics, you
can remove it, increasing sensitivity at the expense of color accuracy.
If you are using refractive optics you should definitely leave it on, as
few scopes (even apos) can provide sharp focus over as wide a wavelength
range as the sensor responds to.
