Then you don't understand how most are designed to work.

A scramjet is a ramjet, the motion of the ship compresses the air into its maw.
When air gets compressed, it gets hot, way above the ignition temperature of
the hydrogen that gets injected into the airstream. So tell me where I'm wrong.

So? Nuclear upper stages can be rocket launched, too. And with much
simpler, familiar, proven geometries and staging mechanisms. (NERVA and
Timberwind were so proposed.)

With 55 Republicans in the Senate and 5 Blue Dog Democrats seeking jobs for
their constituents, you can just about brush aside the Greenies, who have
become by the way increasingly Anti-American in tone. We'll just make sure that
if the nuclear stage doesn't work, it just crashes into some country that we
don't like. Iran for instance.

You do know some people will like this idea

Well the Iranians wanted Enriched Uranium, did they not?

Well anyway if people in the Green Party are going to demonize the United
States, why should we listen to whatever else they have to say? People are
saying that the US Government destroyed the World Trade Center and bombed its
own Pentagon. That is like the rapist saying that his victim enjoyed it and
wanted some more and enjoyed getting bruised and beaten up too and oh by the
way, save the forests.

I think the marriage of Socialism, Anti-Americanism, and Environmentalism in
the Green Party doesn't produce very many receptive ears towards whatever they
may have to say about the environment.

They will carry fewer people, but they will make more trips per day.
Mitch Burnside Clapp pointed out some years ago that a 30-passenger
suborbital rocket with fast turnaround can carry the same number of
passengers per day from L.A. to Sydney as a 747.

The slowness of lines for Customs, security, etc. is a matter of politics
and cost, not transportation speed. The only post-9/11 security screening
process I've experienced that was fast, efficient, and conspicuously
well-run was the one at Washington National. It wasn't hard to figure out
why: an awful lot of highly influential people go through that line.

Oh, and I forgot to mention:

Special mention should go to Newark Airport, where I got through
security in enough time to still make my connecting flight, in
spite of the fact that my previous flight was over two hours late.

Yes, and Boeing announced it's "Sonic Cruiser." It never happened. I
predict that these won't either.

For what it is worth, I agree with Rand.

I feel compelled to add that I predicted at the time that it would
never happen, because it made no sense. People weren't going to be
willing to spend a lot more money on a ticket just to go a little bit
faster. They will to go a lot faster, but not to go a little.

Entering the US for non-residents the Customs' line isn't the problem.
It's hitting the Immigration line behind the 747 from Pakistan or
China that kills you.

I've been to the US about 20 times in the last 2 years and never been
stopped by customs - I have, however, spent up to 2 hours waiting in
line for immigration.

The airport over head is going to remain no matter how fast you get
from A to B. The best alternative would be to fly out of small
airstrips like NetJets do and then you can go from car to Plane and
back.

We've done the latter for major meetings when we've need to have a
half dozen people at meetings in 4 different countries in the same
day. It's cheaper to charter a small jet than to pay for scheduled
airline tickets and try to fit everything in around airports.
