For what they're asking for that, I would strongly recommend you look at a
Meade ETX-90AT with tripod and Go-To hand controller. It's only $10 more,
and is better built with proven optics and goto to boot.

Yes, but will the Meade handle 400X as the NG ad says it can?

LOL!

I believe their lawyers would explain that they are using the acronym "OX"
meaning Optical Power as in 40 - OX, or 40 power and that their printing
company misunderstood the differentiating font instructions so it was never
actually their intent to deceive.... or something equally obsequious.

Having said all that, it might not be a bad little scope if only it were
more in the $249 range.

Its a 90mm MAK on an rather small EQ mount and costs nearly $600. Thats quite
a bit of money for that scope.

Orion sells an EQ mounted 90mm MAK, for $300 and it is likely to superior both
mechanically and optically to the National Geographics scope.

For $600 you can buy a Meade ETX-90EC with a tripod and GOTO. For $600 will
also can buy an Orion 127mm Mak on an Astroview mount which should be a pretty
nice setup.

And if you are interested in an astronomical (or general purpose scope) Orion
has a great many reasonably priced decent quality scopes for $600 or less.

Orion has a good reputation for standing behind their product and has a 30 days
"no questions asked" return policy.

I would not be surprised if the NG scope is not the same thing, just
re-badged and "profitized". National Geographic is not exactly known
for their bargains.

Actually I wondered the same thing but it is clearly a different scope, it has
a flip mirror setup whereas the Orion scope uses a visual back or some such
thing.

The mount appears to be the same German eq. that my old Meade 60mm refractor
sits on, not the sturdiest that I have used. So maybe it is a rebadged
Meade?

Good God !!!! It's an octopus ! Look at all those limbs hanging out !
^_^

Seriously, depends on where the optics are manufacturered, both the
telescope and the acessories. The mount is obviously geared for visual use
only, so that's what you're going to use it for. However, being only 90mm,
don't expect large views of the planets; you can only push the magnification
up to around 80 to 100 or so.

Made in China, I owned it for a short while. All plastic, including the
tube. Same OTA as the Konus 90 Mak, repackaged for Nat. Geog.
