![]() Thanks, Jonathan. You are quite right. Phosphorous pentoxide it is. Why aren't we allowed to play with chemicals (let alone dangerous ones) anymore? Heaven knows they put enough of them in the air we breath, the food we eat and the water we drink. Grim You are allowed to play with chemicals, they're just harder to get hold of these days. However with the miracle of the EU you can get virtually anything in a French supermarket; well, conc. acids, and industrial solvents at any rate. Hywel |

On removing the screw...
1) put a drop of oil on every day for a week or so - taking care that it doesn't run over other vital parts of course ! Then try and get it out - this works better than you'd expect. 2) Do you really need to get it out at all ? You could perhap just tap another hole near it and put in a new screw. Hywel |

In my world, having to obtain permission, special licence, or jump through hoops etc. constitutes not allowed. As an indicator of freedom, it's a lot more accurate than the propaganda we're fed by government (and believed by most 'citizens'). Someone mentioned Potassium Permanganate? You can get hold of big tubs of this at a farmers store. Grim |

Hello Hywel,
1) put a drop of oil on every day for a week or so - taking care that it doesn't run over other vital parts of course ! Then try and get it out - this works better than you'd expect. Thanks for the advice. I will try this 2) Do you really need to get it out at all ? You could perhap just tap another hole near it and put in a new screw. That was plan B. I think the other holes will need drilling out and tapping as the screws are a bit loose due to the corrosion. Regards, Stuart |

One trick that I use on screws that are stuck is to turn them the
wrong way first. That is, you try to tighten the screw a little and often this will crack it free from the corrosion, then you can unscrew it. This has saved my bacon on a number of occasions. Cheers - Mike |
