Spirit's near the equator, not the polar regions.
Take off your T-shirt...or at least get it wet. :-)


So? Winter solstice is winter solstice. It applies to the entire
hemisphere. And yes, Spirit is south of the equator.

But just. This is what I got from the JPL website WRT to location of
the rovers:

Spirit 14.57 degrees south lat.
175.47 degrees east long.

Oppurtunity 1.95 degrees south lat.
354.47 degrees east long.

It means that both are close to the equator (as compared to Sojouner
and the two Vikings) but are on opposite sides of the planet. See this
