waste of money on a futile task whilst things...need ... fixing
Is the direct route the best route to fixing? For instance Space exploration - space mining - cheap platinum - cheap fuel cells - low oil consumption vs. Current trends - higher oil consumption Columbus' fleet could have quickly attacked the Moors and seized a coastal village. Would he, or we, be better off? |

long strut - the inverse-square
True. However the classic Orion designs are based on still secret formulas, derived by Freeman Dyson. The physics involved are not elaborate, though he probably came up with some clever issues. I'll probably have to redo this work if the orginals stay hidden much longer, then be faced with his superior work coming out right after. He proved that the basic design can be self stabalizing, each pulse will tend to happen at a time and location when it will push against the spin caused by the previous pulse being off center. The GA for NASA chart shows a curve for shielding thickness for 3,000 pulse missions and 10,000. Mars is actually a 3,000 pulse mission usually, so the thicker shield will lead to only 15 REM of engine exposure during the trip. |

What utter rubbish. Try looking up when outside at night sometime. When that gets into some ppls' brain then maybe we'll start treating this planet better instead of simply looking for another one to trash. The best way to improve this planet is to stop raping it for resources, when there are effectively boundless resources offworld that we could be using instead. ,------------------------------------------------------------------. | Joseph J. If you're looking for new sources of minerals and other resources, you're ABSOLUTELY wrong. It's also too damn cold ! Wuss. :-) |

YEah - we're all out of territory to conquer on Earth, except the polar caps and the bottoms of the ocean, and nobody cares about them anyway. But don't you remember back in the good ol' cold war days when it was easy to tell who the "bad guys" were - space was touted as "the ultimate high ground" or something. So, there's only one way left to go, and that's up - and it's got a lot better visibility than igloos and submarines. ;-) This is the funny thing about Americans. The assumotion that there is always some new frontier to be subdued and conquered. The reality is that we're stuck with planet Earth. Poop bear, you're missing something very fundamental here. _YOU_ might be "stuck with planet Earth", but that in no way implies that _WE_ are. Good luck in your antarctic colony! Rich |

I see a waste of money on a futile task whilst things back on planet earth that are in dire need of fixing really ought to come first. How do you reconcile the fact that for the last 40 years, that's exactly what they've been doing? And have they shown any progress yet? Of course not! But, like a typical liberal weenie, you want to keep throwing good money after bad, "fixing the problems we have here on Earth." In 40 years of spending money on ftpwhhoe, which problems have we fixed? You want to talk about dead end programs? Feh, Rich |

There have been a few attempts to mildy mitigate the damage being caused but none that really address the fundamental issues head-on And calling ppl with liberal viewpoints 'weenies' is plain silly and shows a blinkered mindset. It just encourages the liberals to call those on the right wing rednecks. You degrade your argument by resorting to name calling. Graham |

When was the last time you saw or heard any talking head, politician or anyone else in the media use the term "redneck" to describe a conservative? However, you do hear the term "liberal" bantered about easily by conservatives in the media and politics. But, guess what? It isn't working any longer as the Virginia govenor's race proved. Also, Sean Hannity looked like a complete ass the last time he was throwing the word around. Like anything else people are just tired of the labels, so much so that those that use them will have that fact be more prevalent than those they are labeling. Eric |
