I think this 80mm takes the cake for it's size/price.

Answering at light speed.

The style of this message is unmistakable. ML. The refractor bucanneer
strikes again. It's serial number 1 for God's sake. The tube has a Name,
with a capital N. Great bargain! Accepts any payment, ships anywhere in the
known Universe.

In a minute, you'll feel sorry you didn't jump.

God forbid! I'd hate to ask what a 6" APQ would go for? I can imagine.

My 105mm AP Traveler will stomp all over this 80mm Zeiss APQ, and hey,
I'm only asking $7500 for my Traveler! (and don't say it can't, my
Traveler gives a perfect, color free star test, I'd say definitely no
less than 1/10 PV)

Just kidding about the sale of mine, and I'd doubt if I'd sell my
Traveler even for that price.
Just too good a scope to part with. Mark D.

Yes, I said stomp.

I didn't say the 4" Traveler was going to stomp an 18" Mirror as far as
light gathering power, resolution, so you're contorting this
subject/thread.

The Traveler wasn't in fact particularly designed to stomp anything
aperture wise per se, and basically was designed to be an ultra high
quality, portable Airline Carry-On scope that you could travel the world
with. Try that with an 18" reflector. There's actually not too many
amatuer scopes which can do it all.

Yet, the Traveler will still most likely excel over your 18" mirror when
it comes to flat, wide field, coma free visual, and imaging,

Sure we can also say too that a 6" Synta Refractor will stomp the 4"
Traveler in many ways, and only costs $700.

I think we all basically agree though, that it is pretty hard to part
with $10K for a scope who's aperture is identical as many of our own
finder scopes. Mark

You all seem to be missing the point. This is a collector's item, not
"merely" an instrument. Hence it commands a substantial premium.
Personally I want the best views for my money, but some people like the
rare or exotic stuff and are happy to pay for it. Tim.

Yes, I understand this Tim, that certain instruments, and other
collectable Items have a value beyond a "normal fair price", sometimes
way beyond, but to me, this isn't exactly an all original item being
listed. With a new CNC Tube, and Feathertouch Focuser, all that's
original, and of any 'real collector value" is the Lens itself.

The CNC Tube, and Feathertouch Focuser, what can thier combined value
be? $800?

In other words this 80mm Zeiss lens alone is worth over $8K?

I don't think so, regardless of serial number 1.
Hey, but god bless my friend in Germany if he sells it for that price. I
hope he does. Mark

Well, people don't buy scopes like this primarily for their optical quality.
After all, there are thousands of 80mm scopes out there that are just as good
optically, and tens of thousands of Newts and SCTs of larger aperture that will
knock it out of the water.

People buy scopes like this for the same reason they buy certain cars, or
certain clothes, or anything else that has come to have a reputation that
bestows a certain status on its owner. In this case, some would see the scope as
a collector's item; a piece of art, and be willing to pay accordingly. It isn't
being priced by the inch, like some commodity!
