![]() Stephen Tonkin Wrote: SNIP_ In my experience, roundabouts are far more efficient than 4-way stops (unless you get a moron who thinks you can't enter the roundabout as long as you can see another car anywhere). You want roundabout chaos, go to France. The rule there is that people on the roundabout have to give way to those entering it; I've never understood why Paris isn't permanently gridlocked. For real fun, go up the Arc de Triomphe, and watch the traffic below. A 6-lane roundabout with absolutely no lane- (or other road-) markings (they would spoil the stellar pattern of the paving) and apparently no rules apart from go around approximately anticlockwise. It is not uncommon to see someone going radially from the inside lane. And yet it seems to work! SNIP_ One of our days was actually spent riding the EuroStar to Paris and back- a very impressive train. And Paris WAS gridlocked, at least that day. As regards the Arc de Triomphe, I'm sure some here have seen the Peter Sellers movie (I don't recall the title) with the traffic at the Arc, just as Stephen describes. What a hoot! The last thing I want to say about the French is that you guys play 'footie' with 'em in a couple of weeks (June 13th?). Make sure you beat the bast**ds! I promise that this will be my last off-topic post on this newsgroup.......... ![]() Starry Skies, Rich PS: The weather was great when we were in England, and a couple of nights at B&Bs in the West Country had really clear and DARK skies. Wish I could have brought my scope. |
