It is well known that people who advertise who is or is not in their
killfile harbour serious delusions of grandeur. Why post "plonks" in the first place when you can just do it and move on? It's a "look at me!" thing. I agree with this. It's also a common technique to avoid answering arguments that one can't answer. The "plonk" is rarely done in this case (I am positive, for example, that Crinklaw is reading this despite his "plonk" of me ... heh!), but stands as the admission of defeat, but done in a way that soothes the ego (and alleviates the growing cognitive dissonance problems). I don't agree with this. I see it done all the time to avoid seeing arguments from people who can't or won't recognize their arguments don't hold water, much more than I see it done to avoid admitting defeat. Both happen, but the former is much more common. At some point, people realize that reading the posts of some others raises their blood pressure. Killfiling, done silently, is a perfectly legitimate solution for that (in my opinion). It also serves to inform the irritant that he/she/it can post a reply, but a further reply will not be forthcoming. It's also a common technique to avoid answering arguments that one can't answer. When you massage that ego, keep a box of tissues nearby. ;^) In your case, it appeared from how you ignored authoritative posts supporting Greg's points that your primary agenda was simply to troll Greg. You made some downright silly comments in the Meridiani thread, e.g., that the colour response of the Pancam isn't well known or not being used, or e.g., that "all colour images are false colour" and "green sky and pebbles aren't true-colour" is somehow a backpedaling contradiction. You are very plonkable. YMMV, IMO and all that. There are those, like myself, who might wish to use the plonk as a courtesy to the plonkee. For example, if there's a heated personal exchange taking place and one party wishes to convey their lack of interest in pursuing same, an argument could be made that with the plonk the plonker is no longer listening to the plonkee. I believe before you can exercise a public plonk some historical basis should exist. In my book, public killfiling of a complete stranger is bush league. The public killfile plonk can be childish and should only be exercised with the greatest restraint. I'm certainly willing to countenance this kind of exception, provided the plonk isn't exercised with a simple "*PLONK*!" as it usually is. I agree with the rest of what you say.
