David, In a totally parallel universe there is something called industrial automation or industrial controls. It deals with programmable controllers performing trivial and repetitive tasks as... Thanks for taking time to send all of that. The links will no doubt prove useful. I actually spent my 32-year working career using this technology in a specialized way, but I was a specifier and user; engineers half a world away (I worked overseas) would build the devices. They were one-off's usually, so I was not exposed to commercial products. Thus the info and links and info that you provided will prove especially useful as a point to start learning. Thanks again, David -- usenet *at* davidillig dawt com |

Thad Floryan:
You should re-do your Google search using "IR observatory dome control", some good links will be found. Here's one to a picture of a guy using the IR system on his LX200 to control the dome's azimuth: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/astron/observatory.htm Another very useful reply and link. Many thanks! Here's one to a picture of a guy using the IR system on his LX200 to control the dome's azimuth: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/astron/observatory.htm Now my curiousity is piqued. The "key" is the name "Technical Innovations" as mentioned at the above URL. Feeding "Technical Innovations IR control" into Google returns everything you need. One example is at URL: http://www.company7.com/techin/pricing.html where you'll see "I.R. system to keep dome slot aligned to telescope motion" retailing for US$890. General specs are at: http://www.company7.com/techin/products/controlspecs.html The manufacturer's page is here (along with accessories): http://www.homedome.com/prices2c.htm I'm still partial to "Talon" and one can get programmable PIC boards at places like Jameco (www.jameco.com) at reasonable prices along with accessories. |

It shouldn't be hard to calibrate a control to rotate the dome at different rates for different declinations. Why don't you contact Observa-Dome? They offer complete turnkey solutions including Dome control. I'm sure they could help you out. http://observa-dome.com/ scotty |
