They looked like fat RPGs with blinking lights- and flew about as well.

That's from the (severely ****ed up)
Verwhoreven movie.

Yeppers. The movie was OK, it just wasn't Starship Troopers. Now the movie
will never be made right.

Coulda been worse- did you see Starship Troopers 2?

In the book the troops, wearing armor and
gear weighing over a ton and looking like
"big steel gorillas", had rocket launchers
in retractable mounts.

Biggest problem I see at the moment blocking the suits is power storage.
Build a power suit for the military, ten years later Ripley is loading cargo
with an articulated forklift suit.

IIRC, Paul Verhoeven wanted to make his own soldiers vs. bugs film but
was well aware he would be accused of plagiarism. So he bought the
rights and used the names but not the central gimmick. At least when
they filmed "The Puppet Masters" they had good reason to leave out the
gimmick. I'd love to see that story done right :-)

Isn't that the biggest problem with almost anything electrical and
portable?
At the risk of turning this into a RAH thread I'll note that we badly
need a Shipstone. Unfortunately there's a word for a really efficient
portable power storage device.

Good power, terrible impulse.

Check out the computer animated "Roughnecks: Starship Troopers
Chronicles" series sometime; they stayed a lot closer to the book-
powersuits, Skinnies, and all: http://www.trooperpx.com/RSTC/series.html
Here, a Mobile Infantry dropsuit descends:
http://misterhook.net/roughnecks/pictures7.htm
Here's a standard powersuit: http://misterhook.net/roughnecks/pictures8.htm
Here, a Warrior Bug is silhouetted against Pluto's moon, Charon:
http://misterhook.net/roughnecks/pictures13.htm
Here's a Skinny: http://misterhook.net/roughnecks/ptphai.htm
Here's Dizzy, who has really big knockers:
http://misterhook.net/roughnecks/pdizzy.htm
....or is it Carmen who has really big knockers? Somebody has really big
knockers, and I'm pretty sure it's a female character. :-)

I don't think that's ever been screened over here, but I see the DVDs
are available, so presumably they are getting some money back.
Thanks.

That's what the numbers on the sign next to the weapon display said. I'd
post the picture, but the flash washed it out (and, of course, thanks to
9/11 I couldn't get back to the museum to take more pictures).

The thing also had warhead as small as 20 tons (0.02 kt).

The reason there were no powered suits was because of cost (even CGI
costs money). They could lose the bugs or the suits but without the
bugs there wasn't much of a point so the suits went bye bye.
