"Phil Wheeler" wrote Wow! That is one long tube. I wonder if the Japanese were making scopes for US distribution back in 1968. No memory, one way or the other. I have no idea, either, but I do believe and (somewhat) recall Edmund offering those 4" refractors in the late 50's/early 60's. I think they were. I looked in the reviews of old ("classic") scopes at Cloudy Nights and there was a Tasco imported from Japan in the 60s. |

Do you know if that was something they produced in Barrington? Was it a
rebranded Jaegers or Japanese scope? ======================================Hi, This is a question that I honestly cannot answer correctly for you, in regards to where these scopes, or their Optics were made? I do remember (god what a memory I have!) that I used to read the S+T mags from this time period (1968-1972) when I attended High School in Wisconsin, and they did have the Edmund ads in S+T with both the 3", and 4" scopes listed. I believe the 3" was $247, and the 4" was $348 at the time (With non-driven EQ Head-Tripod) I looked at the pic you posted, and yes, the tube bears similarities to the one pictured, but if I can correctly recall, the Edmund I used-borrored had a entirely Black Slip-On Metal DewShield. Our School had bought both the 3", and 4" models together, and both came from Edmund shipped-stored in a wooden crate-box so to speak, with wooden cradles to support the OTA's inside the crate. Both Scopes came with a very meager assortment of about 6, or 7 eyepieces total, and while they were only Ramsdens, and Kellners, they worked quite well with the 4" F-15 Scope. I was certainly smitten by the bug, and some years later decided to buy a new Super C-8 Plus from Roger Tuthill (Now deceased, and the company defunct) Honestly, the C-8 never offered quite the stark contrast on objects like this (M-57) as the 4" Achromat did. After 8 years of owning the C-8, I knew it was time to move on, and go back to the high contrast, razor sharp views that a fine refractor could offer. Hence, I bought an Apomax 5.2" F-12 Apo Refractor in early '97, and a AP Traveler in 2001. The Apomax does remind me aesthetically of that old classic Edmund 4", but easily surpasses the Edmund's abilities/performance, and build quality of any other 4"-5" Achro ever made. Don't get me wrong about SCT's though, I like them, and 2-1/2 years ago, bought a Grey Tube Fastar C-14 OTA. The C-14 will pull in those faint fuzzies a bit better than the two refractors will! Good on ya for that. Ever wonder what useful function those neurons could be doing rather than storing data on S&T adds from the Summer of Love? :-) Shawn P.S. Sound like nice scopes, much better than my early 90s Astroscan. |

Ya think? Two posts in one day... The funniest OP post in some time and the responses are as if from Neanderthals. Oh well, I suppose wit has passed SAA by. It didn't used to be that way. There used to be some clever and very amusing folks haunting these halls. Thanks for the chuckle, Mr. Mean, I'm sorry that you are not better understood. rat ~( ); |
