Yes, We wind our insulated stuff around a copper block with no isolation.

How does the insulation stand up to minor abrasion and heating? Does it
require any additional tape wrap or whatever over the wire?

I'd recommend a covering - in our application (extreme low temperature
one minute ( -40 ideally) then +50 in one or two minutes after that,
then back again, we cover it with rapid araldite, which is much more
flexible than the other stuff.
