When this happens they are ALL deleted.

Well, I guess this puts an end to the next round of Herb
bashing......the problem certainly wasn't Herb's doing.

Wrong.

It has hardly even BEGUN.

Sad, but predictable.

It doesn't have to be Herb's doing, and rarely is.

It's just how some of his CUSTOMERS think they have license to operate.

I think we have a happy ending to this story. To all of those folks who
feel that I am a jerk for my posts, all I can offer is that I did try to
communicate with Astromart by email and phone, without success. Put
yourself in my shoes - all of a sudden my account is gone, and I am unable
to find out who/what/why. We all appreciate Herb's posts on this ng, and I
believed that this was a way to reach him.

Finally, I have always defended Herb York/Astromart - google it. I realize
that he and his folks are busy running a "real" business. However, a
response to one of my emails would have avoided this entire thread, and I
would like to encourage to try and let folks know when
they delete an account.

Let's get back to astronomy!

Dennis

"Well, I checked with my sons (15 and 12 yrs old), and they did try and
create an Astromart account for themselves. They say it was rejected
because of their email address at gmail.com. Fine, they didn't get an
Astromart account. I fail to understand why this is cause to delete my
account. They didn't do anything wrong - they just didn't qualify for an
account. What is the problem? Thanks.

Dennis"

To do that he'll have to trip over his tongue. He dreams a lot.

It just seems to me that, in many cases, some Astromart users are not
only "looking a gift horse in the mouth"...they're complaining about
its'color!

Yes - Astromart is a great place. People complaining about the "local"
rules, explicit or implicit, miss the boat imho. Astromart serves its
purpose very well because it is strictly regulated. Rules are what they
are, if one doesn't like them, one just walks away. Usenet serves its
purpose because it is basically unregulated. Yes, Min is a pain, but anyone
can killfile him (or me): freedom of expression at its best and worst.

If I behaved on astromart as I behave on usenet, I'd deserve the boot in a
minute :-) but if I behaved on usenet as I behave on astromart, that would
be boring as hell!

Why couldn't your kids just use your account from the beginning? That would
have solved the problem.

Rockett,

I remember a recent message from Herb stating something to the effect
that 5% of users are responsible for 80% of his time with Astromart and,
as a result, he was implementing software rules and logic to free up
this major portion of his time. What somewhat surprises me is the fact
that a 12- and 15-yr old are interested in browsing astrogear ads.

Anthony.

Dennis,

I don't think you were in anyway a jerk for your postings. I think
you were very gentlemanly and gracious at all times. This was just
an unfortunate coincidence that Herb's filtering had to delete your
accounts. Obviously you and your sons meant no harm and at the
same time, Herb has to have these safeguards in place so he doesn't
have a full time job monitoring Astromart which is certainly
understandable. I'm sure Herb was busy and would have eventually
addressed your problem. Maybe he was even on vacation? Who
knows?

I hope that this thread hasn't put you off of s.a.a in anyway. I
think your contributions are very valuable here.

take care,

I don't blame Herb in the least. I would do the same thing if I was
in his shoes. As usual it's a few bad apples that make things more
inconvenient for the rest of us.

What somewhat surprises me is the fact
that a 12- and 15-yr old are interested in browsing astrogear ads.

I don't know. I wasn't into astronomy yet at that age, but I was
ordering things in the mail and scowering magazine ads (didn't
have anything that resembled an internet in the 70s available to
the public). Apparently Dennis and his sons share an interest in
astronomy which I think is a great thing. I'm sure the sons were
interested in the ads and just wanted to have their own accounts?

BTW, my daughter had her own bulletin board when she was 15
(right before the internet really took off). Really proud of her.

take care,
