Envy is an ugly thing.

And we're starting to feel it. I mean the whole "Why is *our* oil un-
der *their* sand, way over there?!" thing.

The US has been such a paradise of relative tranquility because of
their great wealth and their vast natural resources. It didn't pay
to squabble over them because there was enough for everyone.

But squabbles did occur. Native Americans were genocided and evicted
into barren wastelands because greedy immigrant settlers looked at
their land in envy. The Irish lowly workers of two centuries ago hat-
ed the blacks squeezing into their niche. There was slavery, the Civ-
il War...

Yet overall it's been a paradisical state, while the rest of the
world, exploited, populated, and divided into tribes and nations for
millennia had a lot more unrest to deal with when riches from colonies
far away suddenly became an important issue.

Why did the US never pursue colonialism? Because they had everything
they needed right at home, that's why...

But precisely because of that tranquility they're also extremely naive
and inexperienced about what to do if things change. What do you do
if resources run out, peak, become more expensive to "produce" (i.e.
to pump out of the ground), have to be imported from far away all of a
sudden?

That is the point in history we've arrived at right now...

The problem with your sentence is: it's false. The USA thinks she is the
world police and tries to tell the 6 billion non-US people on Earth how
they should live politically, economically and lifestyle-wise.

Only when their lifestyle includes hijacking our aircraft, murdering
their crew, and flying them into buildings.

Well, since the people hijacking the plane didn't come from the nation
you're presently occupying at great expense nor were they sponsored by
that country or harbored in that country I'd choose the term...

WORLD LYNCH MOB

.... rather than "World Police" in that context.

Of course, just like in a lynch mob, people don't care. 42% polled
this month by USA Today/Gallup/CNN still believed Saddam was behind
9/11. 32% believed he had personally *planned* it. Not WMDs, not
terrorism against Israel, but the September 11 attacks. I've heard
somewhere, but I haven't checked it, that 63% of Republicans still be-
lieve Saddam's responsible for 9/11.

I my country it was all the fault of the Jews once. Communism, greedy
capitalism... It was all part of one giant concerted effort to bring
our great nation down--according to the media and to the people in
power.

What has this got to do with space? You've cross-posted this rubbish to
this group for no reason at all.

We might be able to get it on-topic by mentioning the need for alter-
native energy and things such as solar power satellites as opposed to
the invasion of politically unstable places full of oil.

But right now emotions are a bit high considering a possible turning
point is so close, deciding whether the US is going to go down the
road of robber baron colonial wars or invest in brains instead, so
you should forgive high-strung people the occasional off-topic rant.

Brains would be better for space exploitation, of course, BTW...

You are the first person I have ever known to express such a sentiment. I
don't envy anyone their oil.

The muslims only oppose USA when its sends a battleship to razor 12
rural villages with 16" shells killing 5,000 women, children and
elderly. When the men who were away working in the cities and fishing at
the sea returned for the weekend they saw that no two bricks had
remained on top of each other and bodies littered the land everywhere.
When they learned what had happened they all solemnly swore to avenge
and most joined the Hezbollah to fight the USA and Israel for whose
interest the USA committed this massacre.

The BB New Jersey's attack against Lebanon in 1986 had 1,5x more
casaulties than 9/11.

Anything you say Tamas.

If you were to believe some people, every time the United States uses
weapons in the Middle East, only innocent women, children and the elderly
die - a particularly ironic complaint coming from people who often have no
problem with targeting civilians themselves. I can't recall the last time
anyone there admitted that combatants were among the casualties.

The New Jersey did succeed in destroying the Syrian AA capabilities in
Lebanon. Another bombardment killed the general in command of the Syrian
forces and several of his senior officers.

Yes, but, in all fairness, one of the 9/11 planes hit the *Pentagon.*
That means not all of the terrorists' casualties were civilian, ei-
ther. So I guess that justifies it...

BTW, that was a joke, meant to satirize your reply. I don't know how
much collateral damage the New Jersey cost and how justified and well-
planned her attacks were. But you did accidentally shoot down an Ira-
nian passenger plane once. Now imagine what kind of retaliation you'd
impose on Iran if roles had been reversed and they had killed a plane
load of Americans. But that way around it's just: "Whoops! Sorry!"

You're the biggest bully on the block, getting away with things others
couldn't possibly dream of doing.

Don't forget the plane that hit the Pentagon was filled with civilians. I
wasn't suggesting that the various radical groups in the Middle East did not
target combatants, but that they don't seem to try to make a distinction
between combatants and non-combatants.

Me neither since I doubt accurate info about this exists. I am pretty sure
Tamas pulled his number out of his ass or used a source with an anti-US or
anti-Israeli agenda. His analysis of the causes of radical behavior in the
Middle East is as one-sided as it gets.

Well offhand I don't recall the United States punishing any country for
their accidents.

Better to be at the top of the heap than underneath.
