If you come to visit I can offer you instant coffee but I'm afraid I don't
have biscuits or cake. I do have about seven functional PC's 900Mhz and
faster though that I've mainly put together from parts I got cheap or was
given.

That sounds very healthy and worthwhile.

I also have no biscuits nor cake nor sugar... Just never got the taste
for them again after my student days many moons ago.

Hopefully the database bashing going on at s@h means that credit will be
duely awarded for the pent-up WU returns everyone is holding at the moment.

All good science, and an 'education' also.

Cheers,
Martin

(OK... So I didn't give up beer (:-))

:-) It was more a metaphor for my financial situation. I do get biscuits
about once a month or so.

I've turned my farm off, just running classic on my essential machines.
Still no BOINC contact with Berkeley, yet alone with ET.

(OK... So I didn't give up beer (:-))

:-( I did.

You're kidding, right? If not, I admire your dedication; my hat's off to
you. Personally, I couldn't go without bourbon creams and digestives with
me tea. I've got a G5 coming soon, but I'm planning to configure BOINC to
use only 1 of the CPUs in order to spare the 9 fans... ;-)

Not kidding. I don't have a lot of money and I get more pleasure from
playing with me hardware (Not like that!) than I would from a few bikkies.
Both would be nice but, hey, no good coveting what I can't have.

Sounds like a plan.

Evolve or die.

Hopefully there's been a lot of positive BOINC evolution recently!

Hopefully. I can't upload, can't download and have lost about the last 10
days worth if credit. (Which just happened to be 10 days when I thought
"Damn the electricity bill!" and had BOINC running on everything I have,
24/7). I'm beginning to seriously wonder about farming. Might have to shut
down a few PCs and go back to just using 'spare cycles' on my main machine,
when it's switched on.

At 24/7 you are not temperature cycling your computer which should
extend its life.

As to cost, you cannot be drawing more than the wattage of your
computers power supply, probably closer to half unless you have four
hard drives and peripherals drawing power.

200 Watts X 24 hours = 4.8 KW-HR X cost per kw-hr

For me $US 0.43 per day, about $US13 a month for a no other use
computer. Subtract normal usage time.

A small price to help ET find a friend in this lonely universe.

Most new psu's are 75% efficient at best, older ones even worse, so a 200W
psu, under full load, draws about 250W. I do agree that consumption at full
load with only 1 hd and a low power gpu is probably around half or just over
half of the stated consumption.
