I wonder if overhead transparency pens would work?

Yes.
The fine, permanent kind work well. I buy boxes of ispropyl alcohol
impregregnated 'pre-injection swabs', and use these as erasers when needed.

Best Wishes

Dull black crayons or, failing that......lipstick.

Lipstick?!? Sounds crazy at first, but when I think about it....

Good thinking. Use some red lipstick, and let us know how it works
out in the field ;-)

In all seriousness, you want something that draws *very* thin lines.
I originally used the sharpie fine points, and found the lines
obscured what a few stars. The extra fine sharpies are perfect. Give
'em a try on one chart, and see what you think.

I used the fine point Sharpies and erased my mistakes with Acetone.

Acetone on a Q-tip erases the fine point Sharpies **instantly**, it's like
magic.

Is acetone what gives a Sharpie its distinctive odor? I use lighter =
fluid to remove Sharpie marks.

How about using sheet plastic (transparency) and overlay on chart(s). Simply
fold over overlays (over charts) and mark up to your hearts content. You can
mark chart numbers and index borders and remove/replace overlays later.

Dear Fr,
In fact, waxed paper overlay is even better and cheaper.
Thanks for the idea.
best
