John Savard History recalls that there is rarely a true shortage of anything vital. It is always the deliberate denial of such things which causes an exodus. A more just world might still have token national borders. But the international community would cross those borders to bring aid and justice to the majority. For too long we show respect to those completely unworthy of any respect under the guise of diplomacy/arms shipments. We have some generations to go before we can learn live down our total indifference to the plight of literally billions on this very generous planet. All of whom suffer simply because of some despotic tyrant. Perhaps we should have a name for those of our own leaders who by action, or inaction, support such vile tyrants for personal or political profit? The Devil's Disciples may seem a little too melodramatic. The Devil certainly seems to look after his own at the very top of the human pyramid. I may not believe in any god but The Devil has a very obvious "Special Relationship" with many "leaders." While the innocent are cut down in swathes, the truly evil live on into ripe old age. All still clinging to the slime and blood covered tendrils of power. As if by some hideous, unspeakable agreement with their Maker. |

It just is not true that for most of human history that we have had near-zero infant mortality rates, or societies where even the poorest had enough to eat. The process may happen more dramatically in aphids - but pretty well all living things breed in excess of replacement, and so they reach environmental limits, and so their numbers are limited by starvation when they are not continually trimmed by predation. Humans have generally managed to avoid succumbing to predators. So it's been starvation and plague for us rather than lions and tigers and sharks for the most part. John Savard |

It seems quite strange to me that it was non-white voters who saved America from electing John McCain in 2008 - while he seemed like he would make a good President, who would look after America's national security from terrorism well, when the stock market crashed, he displayed a profound disconnect with the economic concerns of the average working American. And it looks like, once again in 2016, they will be the reason why Hillary Clinton will win, not Donald Trump. John Savard |

The only distinct group in America that can elect a president is women. Part of the reason that regressive white males are angry is that they know they are irrelevant. As time goes on they become less and less relevant, more and more angry, and, in a feedback loop, less and less relevant. They don't know that there is a lower limit and they have already reached it--utter irrelevance, at least in the presidential election. The election of a half-African man* with an Islamic name just seven years after 9/11, and his re-election four years later, only underscores the futility of being an angry old white guy. *Quoting others as to race, because I do not recognize racial divisions, only species. Except in dogs, where I recognize different breeds within the a single species. Trump has added a man to his ticket who has a broad anti-human-rights agenda. It is women and African Americans and Hispanics who will defeat Trump. I will do my part for justice by voting for Mrs. Clinton as well, though my vote matters less. The old "what if everyone felt their vote didn't matter" doesn't apply because everyone doesn't think that and in Realpolitik Trump has no chance of winning my state, Maryland. And, as I said, I will vote, as a matter of principal and because there is more than the presidency at stake in this election. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm |

Meanwhile, for the last 26 years you've had nothing but production job flight and a declining middle class. So, next election, same-old, same-old? We are at statistical full employment and in many cities jobs are going unfilled. A friend in Denver tells me that you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an employment sign. Yes indeed in some of the southern red states (I'm looking at you Mississippi) the unemployment is high and the poorly educated don't have much chance to land any kind of job. Part of that is because these states have been run by severe right wingers who cut infrastructure and education to the bone in order to save their constituents some taxes. It is no wonder then that young millennial entrepreneur job creators have declined to move there. What kind of life would they have and what kind of future would they be offering their kids? Yesterday I heard one bright young kid from Miss in an interview on the radio. Straight A student, who upon graduation will high tail it out of there as soon as possible. Said there is nothing for him in the deep south, no opportunity, no real life. Meanwhile up east in NY state, Massachusetts and Maine where we have family, there is a distinct shortage of skilled workers and the pay is very good. |
