This leads to huge temperature extremes. It's especially cold during the lunar night. This deep thermal cycling isn't good for electronics. Jeff -- "the perennial claim that hypersonic airbreathing propulsion would magically make space launch cheaper is nonsense -- LOX is much cheaper than advanced airbreathing engines, and so are the tanks to put it in and the extra thrust to carry it." - Henry Spencer There's actually a great deal of planetshine that's worth 50+ times as much as moonlight here on Earth, so it's nighttime environment is not actually dark nor nearly as cold as what you suggest. Clearly, no raw science from their Yutu or that of its lander is an indication of a science mission failure. We still do not even have any of their raw video or images to go by, because every bit of it has been data corrupted and undocumented, thereby making whatever images near worthless. Even the technology as to their 400+ K (260+F) CCD imagers has been excluded. There hasn't been one iota of actual raw science, at least not thus far. |
