What in the world has this got to do with astronomy?

Beats me. I hesitate to think what would happen if we were all to
rush into limbo like this.
Not another poor soul forced at gunpoint to take drugs by those
immoral drug dealers?
It might not be all bad news though: I wonder if he can claim his
'expenses' back against taxes?

Nothing. But it's certainly brought the leftist hate-mongering
hypocrites out the rocks they were hiding under...

A serious question - why do you post this here? I saw your original
note (and response to another person's similar question) but frankly,
there are *many* topics that interest astronomers in general. We all
drive cars - should we start threads about which the best car is? We
all live in dwellings of some sort - should we discuss the
size/price/type of our dwellings? The fact that we share something in
common doesn't make it "fair game" to post on this newsgroup about it.
This news group is for astronomy, not for whatever you think
astonomers all may have in common. There's a *big* difference. And
it's rather self-serving to think that this newsgroup is amenable to
any topic that you may choose to post on. There are newsgroups on
which this post would be perfectly on topic. Why don't you post it
there? It's just not appropriate here.

My suggestion is that you take your Herb posts, and your Boy Scout
posts and your GWB posts, and your Rush posts, and find a "Who I hate
and why I hate them" kind of newsgroup or yahoo group - then maybe
you'll see first-hand just how unpleasant it is to populate newsgroups
with people like yourself.

A serious question -- why do you read these posts?

My understanding of netiquette (which is nothing more than someone
else's opinion, not necessarily my own) is a good as the next person's,
but the truth is that OT threads like this one don't harm the group --
in fact, from the number of peole who jump into them, I would say that
a lot of folks find them interesting or entertaining, regardless of how
strongly those folks support or differ with the OP's assertions.

That's debatable, and in any case, it's a slippery slope: once you
let this OT thread slide, then you'll let others slide, too. I'm not
a strict constructionist as far as the charter goes, but I don't think
"doesn't harm the group" is supportable (how would you collect evidence
for that?), or sufficient reason for letting something outside the
charter slide. It should actually help someone in the group in some
way.

Answered in the original message, Chris:

"Yeah, it's off-topic. But I think there are enough in the SAA crowd
interested in Rush's fate to bring it up."

I saw your original
note (and response to another person's similar question)

Did you think I would have a different reason later?

Some do. Do you complain about that? Did you gripe when Starlord
wanted help to find a name for his truck? (I checked, you didn't.)

We
all live in dwellings of some sort - should we discuss the
size/price/type of our dwellings? The fact that we share something in

The Boy Scout thread was not "MY" thread. Why didn't you gripe about
the Boy Scout thread? Surely you know that not all astronomers are
Boy Scouts.

Why did you not complain about HUNDREDS of "off-topic" threads listed
in the archives? Were the threads not offensive to your point of
view, so that made them okay?

Admit it, you dislike me, and you're happy to join all the Herbivores
and ditto-heads in chorus whenever you think they've got me on the
run.

You must admit it, it's so easy to dislike you!

It would be more accurate to say I find you offensive, and don't think
you contribute anything positive to this newsgroup.
