They've got the tools to do it right, but a) they had really no lead time, which is why they're releasing the revamped eps one new one a week, b) they've been told do it as best as possible, but try not to make it too much better than the original effects, and tweak only where applicable, and c) their budget is limited, so just do something quick and dirty as much as you can get away with it, and leave it at that. Also being leaked is word that the mesh for the Enterprise was lifted off the internet from one of the mesh sites, but nobody's really sure whose it was just yet. Still looks like a painting, and the new CGI background is closely modelled after the original, but all the structures were given a more more modern and realistic appearance, especially that silly spherical tank. And did you notice the guy walking through it in the distance? I didn't the first time, but he's there the first time you see the painting. I'm getting it on a fair broadcast signal, so I missed that one. I'm looking forward to seeing these on DVD, since so far it seems like a lot of effort for so little return. They also redid the visual effect of the Horta tunneling into the chamber where Kirk and Spock are. It was a definite improvement. Not exciting, but better. The space sequences in "I, Mudd" are *vastly* improved. Is Norman's internal mechanism improved as well? ISTR some flashing lights instead of moving parts. Well, the "Enterprise Changing Course" visual effect was absolutely horrible, almost as though the staff got half-way through rendering it and then ran out of time. If there was any surface detail on the hull, I didn't see it. Looked like they used an unpainted AMT model to me. |

I see the lizard blinks. I'm glad they didn't update the Gorn- they could
have easily done so with the model from "Enterprise". Other than the soon-to-be-stock phaser and photon torpedo shots, what improvements were made? Even with my crappy broadcast signal, the colors are crisper than I've ever seen, even on video. |

Other than the soon-to-be-stock phaser and photon torpedo shots, what improvements were made? ....Reportedly, this episode had some internal controversy. Half the CGI team were calling for replacing the Gorn suit with the CGI Gorn from the "Mirror Universe" episodes of "Enterprise", while the others were siding with See-BS that it wasn't worth the cost of erasing the Gorn, filling in the holes in the background, and then rendering a new Gorn to match the action. ....Of course, the episode everyone is waiting for is "The Doomsday Machine", just to compare it with that "remastered" version that was being proposed to Paranoidmount ten years ago, when the CGI tech wasn't anywhere near what it is today. Even with my crappy broadcast signal, the colors are crisper than I've ever seen, even on video. ....The capped eps that are showing up on the binary groups aren't looking crisper where colors are concerned, alas. They're looking much darker than the current DVD releases, and until these new remasterings get released on DVD so a comparison can be made, the current DVD versions are still superior WRT color depth and clarity.
