No coincidence. In fact it's quite common.

It's called 1-to-1 spin-orbit resonance.

Question: What major solar system object is locked into a spin-orbit
resonance with its primary that is other than 1-to-1?

answer neptune and pluto?

actually, you could include any asteroid or KBO at the respective
Langrange regions away from any planet, especially the ones at 2:3 and
2:5 resonances...

BZZZZZZZZT! Sorry wrong answer.

(Actually, I think you may be thinking of a different kind of resonance
(orbit-orbit). My question was specifically about spin-orbit resonance -
rotations of the secondary in relation to orbits of the primary)

me? i've personally revoked pluto's license to be a planet...

The ever so elusive Aliens who reside on the "Dark Side of the Moon" (still
the best album, ever) synchronized the moon so that we only see one side.
They built huge terminals to dock their spaceships on the dark side. There
is also a variety of Taco and Pizza joints there. Since it is so cold, their
preferred way of drinking beer is "warmed" to just above the solidifying
point of water (appr. 42F). The Rolling Stones are whisked there quite
often by the Aliens, which explains their wrinkled faces, i.e. prolonged
exposure to -280F. Mick says he's getting too old for that **** and wants
Pink Floyd to play the next moon-gig, after all, they immortalized the "Far
Side", as it was known to heathens and believers alike, by renaming it to
"The Dark Side", a term the Aliens still haven't quite come to terms with.

One of the Apollo astronauts orbiting in the docking module, reported seeing
shiny metallic flashes on the dark side scooting across the surface. Well,
those were Pizza delivery vehicles, made of polished Titanium.

Hope this answers your question.

Give that man a Cupie-Doll!!!

Yes it's Mercury that is captured into a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance around the
Sun (rotating three times for every two revolutions around the Sun).

Contributing factors in allowing this 3:2 spin-orbit resonance to be stable
are Mercury's permanent bulge and its orbital eccentricity.

Have you ever explained this to a non-Astro geek. I have. It's fun to hear

Default moon's rotation

When I'm out set up for Sidewalk Astronomy and someone asks why we see the
same side all the time, I use the simple way of telling them and then they
are happy.

"The moon takes about 29 days to go around the Earth, at the same time it's
spinging on it's own at a rate of One Turn every 29 days. Thus the two go
together so it shows the same face to us all the time.
