...wind up resorting to pipe wrenches in frustration to try
extracting the Rod.

EXACTLY what the previous owner did. I watched him do it. I got it
nicely repaired though with a tap & die set and a little anti sieze
lubricant.

Mark,

A tap & die set and a little lube cleaned the mess up nicely; better
than new. We had the equipment in our maintenance shop so I didn't
have to make a special trip or spend any money. Now for some
observing.
