Funny, I thought that basically all of the energy we use to survive does
initially come from solar power, e.g. plants...

Solar power does provide the energy for potted plants. Conversely, the power
for Mr. Elifritz' comment above is, I suspect, from planted pot.

Well that makes global extinction, global deforestation, global pollution, and
global warming induced climate change perfectly ok then, after all, we are
just burning and eroding away plant and animal remains. And it is perfectly ok
to burn up in 100 years what took 100 million years for nature to create.

You haven't said anything funny yet. We are using oil to make
fertilizers to feed the plants, and we are killing the soil bacteria
with the fertilizers, washing away the soil with the resultant
agricultural practices, and we have overpopulated the world with the
resulting food, and are now totally dependent on that oil to distribute
that food. It's a global oil for food program that has been occuring for
the last 50 years now. Do you understand how fragile and unstable our
civilization really is because of that? We are one step away from
sharpening stainless steel spoons into arrowheads. You may think it's
funny, but I don't.

Nitrogen fertilizer is made with hydrogen, actually(*). The hydrogen is
currently mostly obtained from natural gas, but there's nothing
essential about that.

(*) And nitrogen and oxygen from air, and in some cases CO2 (also from
natural gas.)

Almost a touche' but not quite. I said we are use oil *to* make fertilizer,
but more generally, hydrocarbons, by burning them, for energy, to make
fertilizers, deliver them, apply them, work the soil, harvest the crops, and
deliver them to markets. We are still way over the top in terms of
agricultural sustainability.

I can't disagree with that. Dr. Dryden, who received his PhD when he
was 20 (!), was to aeronautics what von Braun became to rocketry. He
may have been the smartest person ever to cash a NASA paycheck.
