I think that the various flavors of this idea is the cause of a whole lot of
trouble. My advice is to buy for today, which often (not always!) means a
good visual setup like a small (6"-10") dob.

I agree.

Also, the scope in question here is an 80mm F11.4 achromat and costs something
like $1100 without drives. The mount is a good one but the scope itself is not
well suited for any sort of astrophotography, being small and relatively slow.
