I *love* Cygnus!

I especially like to take peope who have never looked through a
telescope before and use it to demonstrate to them the difference
between what most people *think* a telescope does best (make things
bigger) and what a telescope *really* does best (make things
brighter)!

I like to have 'em look up using only their eyes and count the stars
in Cygnus. Usually they say "five" or on a good night more.

Then I invite them to step up to my 8" newt which is already aimed at
the heart of the swan and count again. They usually don't get much
further than "OH MY GOD!" ... which I believe translates to
ten-billion-zillion...

I also like Cygnus because about two years ago my significant other
and I spent Fourth Of July weekend camped out at Cherry Springs, PA.
Some time around midnight a voice from the dark yelled out "Irridium
Flare... in thirty secononds!"

Another voice answered "WHEEERRREEE???"

And almost in unison, about three or four people from all over the
observing field shouted "CYGNUUUUUSSSS!!!" This crowd was really in
sync, because almost exactly thity seconds later an IF lit up that
constellation, so bright and so long that applause erupted!

It was great!
